Undergraduate Biology and Biochemistry Advising

Who Do We Serve

While the University’s Undergraduate Colleges supports students during their freshman and sophomore years, the Biology Academic Advising team is the primary resource for declared Biology and Biochemistry majors from their sophomore year through graduation.

We specialize in the "Life Sciences" portion of your degree, helping you navigate the complexities of our upper-division curriculum and specializations.

Our Areas of Expertise

  • Major-Specific Planning: We help you map out your BIO course sequences, ensuring you meet the requirements for your specific BS Specialization (e.g., Neuroscience, Genetics, Developmental Biology), Biology BA, Biology Minor or Biochemistry Major.

  • Registration & Permissions: Our team assists with BIO-specific registration hurdles via BIO_Registration@stonybrook.edu.

  • Degree Clearance: We monitor your progress toward graduation and handle the final major clearance for the Biology and Biochemistry degrees.

  • Research & Honors: We provide guidance on registering for credit-bearing independent research (BIO 486/487/489), completing the Upper-Division Writing Requirement (UDWR), and qualifying for Departmental Honors.

  • Transfer Evaluations: We review post-freshman transfer credits to determine equivalency for Biology major requirements.
