Recurring WGSS Events

Throughout the academic year, WGSS hosts and co-hosts numerous events. The department also sponsors several recurring events that are held annually. A list of these events can be found below and our department events calendar.

  • WGSS Undergraduate Open House: Hosted each Fall and Spring semester, this event provides an opportunity for students to connect with the WGSS community and learn more about the department's undergraduate programs, courses, internships, research opportunities, and student engagement initiatives. Meet fellow students, faculty, and staff in a welcoming and informal setting, ask questions, and discover ways to get involved. Enjoy free pizza, participate in fun activities, and enter for a chance to win exciting prizes!
  • Common Reading Group: Launched in Spring 2026, the WGSS Common Reading Group provides students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations around a shared text selected by community vote. The program encourages critical reflection, dialogue, and community-building by bringing students, faculty, and staff together to discuss themes related to gender, sexuality, identity, social justice, and lived experiences.

Participants read the selected book throughout the semester or academic year and gather for a facilitated discussion to share insights, perspectives, and questions inspired by the text. The Common Reading Group is open to all WGSS students.

Our inaugural book selection was Hijab Butch Blues: A Memoir by Lamya H., an acclaimed memoir that explores faith, identity, belonging, and queerness. You can learn more about our first discussion and the conversations it inspired by visiting our WGSS Blog
