The purpose of the WGSS Graduate Student Society is to promote the professional development of all graduate students in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Department. Through feminist practices of resource sharing, community building, and knowledge creation, the WGSS GSS’s workshops, conferences, networking opportunities, and other events contribute to the academic community in and beyond Stony Brook University. The WGSS Graduate Student Society is committed to providing graduate students the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to become leaders in their community, advocate for each other, and strengthen skills valuable in academic and non-academic settings. In accordance to feminist, queer, and trans theories and methodologies, the WGSS GSS seeks to serve as a vehicle for graduate students’ agency and voice in the WGSS Department.
The WGSS GSS hosts monthly general board meetings for graduates students to get together and bring up questions and concerns relevant to the graduate student body. We also determine the goals for the organization and how to use our resources to support students. We host regular pedagogy sessions, where students across cohorts come together to share resources and build stronger teaching practices. Additionally we organize community-building and recreational events. Graduate students become active members by attending one of our events. Two events per year are required to maintain active membership. To learn more contact the WGSS GSS co-chairs.
