Vivien Hartog Awards

Vivien Hartog Graduate Student Teaching Award

Named in honor of Vivien Hartog, a WST graduate certificate student who passed away before completing her Ph.D. in Sociology, this award recognizes a graduate student who exemplifies Vivien’s lifelong commitments to social justice, activism, teaching, and learning.

 

Eligibility:

  • Open to all full-time PhD students in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
  • WGSS graduate certificate students with a teaching record in the undergraduate program may also apply
  • Must have completed WST 698 (Teaching Practicum Seminar) with a grade of A- or higher
  • Must have at least two years of teaching experience in the WGSS undergraduate program, including at least one course as the lead instructor
  • Winter, Summer, and online courses may count
  • You may apply multiple times if eligible and not previously awarded

 

Vivien Hartog Travel Award

This award provides financial support for PhD and MA students to attend conferences or conduct research essential to their academic development.

  • Award Amount: Up to $750 (three awards available annually)
  • Purpose: Travel for academic conferences or thesis/dissertation research
  • Application Deadline: November 15

Eligibility:

  • Open to all currently enrolled PhD and MA students in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
  • You must be:
    • a) Presenting or attending* a conference within the academic year, or
    • b) Traveling for research, archives, or professional development within the academic year
  • If only attending, you must explain the relevance (e.g., publishing, networking)
    Repeat applications are allowed, but priority is given to students who have not received the award previously and whose application is outstanding
