Second Degree

Overview

The following restrictions apply to Stony Brook University’s Second Bachelor Degree Program.

  • Admission to our Second Bachelor's Degree program is capacity limited for select programs.
  • Second-degree candidates are not admitted to programs in the  College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) , including Computer Science, at Stony Brook University. The only exception is the Electrical Engineering ONLINE program. Students are also not admitted to Pre-Nursing.
  • Those admitted to our Second Bachelor's Degree Program cannot change their major without the approval of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

How To Apply For a Second Bachelor’s Degree

Those who elect to apply to Stony Brook University for a second bachelor's degree are required to apply as a transfer student first, and then note the following important guidelines for second degree applicants.

  • You must choose a major for your application. Applicants for second degrees are not permitted to apply to the General Studies Program, the Multidisciplinary Studies Program, Pre-Nursing Program, or programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.. A second bachelor's degree may only be earned in a discipline that is significantly different from the first bachelor's degree.
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 in all post-secondary studies for the first degree obtained. Note: Restricted programs at Stony Brook University may require a higher minimum GPA.
  • Applicants for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Respiratory Care, or Social Work should contact the Health Sciences Center for restrictions and application procedures.
  • Prior to the start of classes at Stony Brook University, a final transcript from the institution awarding the first bachelor’s degree must be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions which indicates the previous degree earned.
  • Students accepted to the second degree’s program must earn at least 36 credits in residence at Stony Brook, including all required coursework for second degree and selected general education requirements.

Applying For a Graduate Degree

State University of New York (SUNY) policy prohibits Stony Brook University admission applications from inquiring into an applicant’s prior criminal history. After acceptance, the College shall inquire if the student previously has been convicted of a felony if such individual seeks campus housing or participation in clinical or field experiences, internships (where a criminal history background check is required) or study abroad programs. The information required to be disclosed under SUNY policy regarding such felony convictions shall be reviewed by a standing campus committee consistent with the legal standards articulated in New York State Corrections Law, and other applicable law.

Students who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that their prior criminal history may impede their ability to complete the requirements of certain academic programs and/or to meet licensure requirements for certain professions. Students who have concerns about such matters are advised to contact the dean's office of their intended academic program.
