SUNY Initatives

Top 10% Promise

In 2024, The State University of New York launched the SUNY Top 10% Promise Program. This initiative provides direct admission to students in the top 10% of their high school class, by GPA, who also meet specific academic preparation requirements. New York students will work with their school counselor to verify eligibility and must indicate interest in the Top 10% Program through the ApplySUNY Application Portal. Stony Brook is a participating university in this program.

Note: Students interested in the Stony Brook EOP program are encouraged to submit an application through the traditional application process. Students interested in applying to an Honors Program or Simons STEM Scholars are also encouraged to apply through the traditional application process to ensure all deadlines can be met.

You can learn more about this initiative on the SUNY website.

Free App Weeks and Application Fee Waivers

SUNY Free Application Weeks are hosted annually, generally in late October to early November. During this time period, first-year, transfer, New York, out-of-state, and international students can apply to up to five SUNY schools with no application fee, including Stony Brook University.

Please note, Free App Weeks may go beyond our November 1 Early Action Application Deadline but students interested in being considered as on time for early action must apply and have a complete application file submitted by November 1, regardless of when Free App Weeks end.

Students applying during Free App Weeks are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible to ensure access to their StartSBU Portal (application portal), which is required for applying to these additional programs by November 1.

You can learn more about this initiative on the SUNY website.

In addition to Free App Weeks, SUNY offers a number of application fee waivers year round based on a variety of reasons. You can learn more about these and eligibility on the SUNY website.
