Undergraduate sociology internships offer students the opportunity to earn 0–6 academic
credits (SOC 488), following approval from the department. Internships allow students
to apply sociological perspectives and skills in professional settings such as community
organizations, research centers, nonprofit agencies, and public institutions. Through
supervised field experience, students develop critical thinking, professional competencies,
and practical insight that support academic growth and post-graduation goals.

The EDE+ Summer Institute develops student-driven, long-term research projects in
economics and related fields over a full 9-week program.
Conversations to Remember is a nonprofit dedicated towards combating loneliness and
isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students
with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for
virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and students
could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training to
the students in the program about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well
as additional support throughout their service. Since these visits are virtual, you
can do it without any travel. The students are matched based on the times that they're
available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular,
weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities
that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to
volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

TurnUp provides an experientially based program that empowers interns to become civically
engaged, responsible, and educated social justice advocates.
Interns develop their civic literacy and democratic competency in a remote yet collaborative
setting, by participating in civic actions, working on voter turnout projects, performing
targeted outreach, engaging in advocacy and activism, finding and participating in
remote volunteer opportunities together, attending the TurnUp Speaker Series, as well
as doing civics and activism related research, writing and presenting.
Wellthy is a caregiving concierge and backup care platform focused on supporting members
with any needs related to caring for themselves or their loved ones. Interns will
play a key role in supporting the government programming portion of Wellthy's business.
Intern will be focused on assessing eligibility and needs related to social determinants
of health (SDOH) using a structured screening tool. There will be on-site training
in the Bronx, followed by remote/virtual work for the remainder of the program.

Youth Enrichment Services (YES) enriches the lives of the youth and their families
residing in the Bay Shore, Brentwood, Central Islip, and West Islip communities. YES
will provide services and programs aimed at youth development, empowerment and delinquency
prevention with a special emphasis on at-risk and hard-to-reach youth and families.

My project involves analyzing the intersection of migration and tattooing by looking
at the Instagram pages of migrant tattoo artists and/or watching episodes of the show
“Ink Master.” Student RAs would ideally have an interest in the topic and familiarity
with Instagram and basic Excel. We would work together to code the videos, pictures,
and comments of several Instagram profiles and/or TV episodes. There may also be a
need to collect and synthesize existing scholarly work on the topic in the form of
a literature review.

I am currently completing my work on French speaking West African women in NYC and

Data Collection - This would be a lot of hands-on work with data entry and collection
into spreadsheets. The objective is to transcribe data from an online repository into
a spreadsheet for future data analysis. It would be a weekly commitment with quick
biweekly check-up meetings to ensure everyone is on track. You'd submit your completed
spreadsheet to the Grad RA each week so we can make sure everything looks good. It
would be preferred if the students have some experience working with Google Sheets
and can accurately ensure the data is properly digitized. It is approximately 3 hours
of work per week per credit hour you register for.
