Graduate Opportunities

Research Grants & Exploration Funding

Awards for Career Exploration (ACE)

  • What it is: Reimbursed funding of up to $750 for professional development activities outside the traditional academic track.

  • Eligibility: Open to graduate students pursuing career exploration opportunities.

  • Deadline: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Departmental Memorial Funds (Slobodkin, Sokal, & Williams) 

  • What they are: Small research and travel grants funded through departmental endowments to support graduate student work:

    • The Lawrence B. Slobodkin Fund: Supports graduate student education and research in ecology (with preference for work focusing on lower animals and non-flowering plants).

    • The Robert R. Sokal Fund: Supports research and travel emphasizing statistical applications and methodology in evolutionary biology.

    • The George C. Williams Fund: Supports student research in any area of evolutionary biology.

  • Eligibility: Current Stony Brook Ecology & Evolution graduate students. Awards typically range up to $500–$1000.

  • Deadline: Announced annually (awarded at the Department Retreat).

Fellowships & Postdoctoral Positions

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) 

  • What it is: A highly prestigious national fellowship providing three years of financial support (including a competitive stipend and tuition allowance).

  • Eligibility: Early-stage graduate students (U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents) in STEM.

  • Deadline: Early November annually.

Fieldwork & Research Opportunities

Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) Graduate Programs (Heading 4)

  • What it is: Field-based research courses and station opportunities in Costa Rica focusing on tropical biology, ecology, and conservation.

  • Eligibility: Open to active graduate students in ecology, evolutionary biology, or related environmental fields.

  • Deadline: Varies by course and season.
