Summer is an ideal time to immerse yourself in a research experience! URECA offers
several options (described below). We also encourage you to explore other campus
options, including our partnership SUNY SOAR program, as well as off-campus experiences!

The URECA Summer Programs (URECA Summer, Explorations in STEM, Velay Fellowship) support Stony Brook University undergraduates doing full-time faculty-mentored research, scholarly or creative activity for ten weeks (i.e. 9-5 Monday-Fridays). on campus.
All URECA programs: The URECA summer programs are open to current Stony Brook undergraduates with at least one semester of spring/fall coursework remaining (seniors graduating in May/August are not eligible to apply). See eligibility criteria (majors) for Explorations in STEM/Velay tracks. In most cases, research is conducted on campus, Mondays-Fridays.*

Award amounts may vary slightly. The average stipend award amount is $5000.
Interested students should complete the central application by the deadline (March 13, 2026) and check all programs/tracks to which they are applying (multiple selections can be made). Please be aware that the Explorations in STEM & Velay Fellowship tracks require participation in weekly programming meetings/events*.
Use the link below to apply to any of the URECA programs/tracks (including Explorations in STEM, URECA Summer, Velay Fellowship). The Application requires uploads of the following documents: a) personal statement (1 page or less), b) research project proposal (1-3 pages), c) unofficial transcript, d) resume/CV (optional, but recommended); plus a letter from the proposed faculty mentor. The research project proposal should be written by the applicant in consultation with the faculty mentor. Students who are new to research are not expected to have as detailed a proposal.
*If you are still in the process of obtaining a placement and haven't yet confirmed the mentor at the time of the application - please list the general area of research you are interested in, and contact URECA for advice/help on identifying a research placement).
*Requirement regarding full-time in person research?. If for any part of the upcoming 10-week program you are planning to work remotely , are employed in a part-time job on or off campus, or plan to take summer classes (with permission of your faculty mentor), please describe in your application. If you are planning to conduct research off-campus at libraries/archives or are able to do the work remotely, please explain how you will communicate with your mentor and receive guidance on a regular basis. Be sure to explain how you will fulfill commitment to research for ~ 40 hours/week for 10 weeks.
The application consists of the following:
- ONLINE APPLICATION - includes uploads of personal statement; research project proposal; transcript (unofficial) and CV/resume.
- LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION. The faculty letter should comment on the student's research or creative capabilities and potential to carry out the specified project, and confirm that the faculty has agreed to oversee/supervise the research project proposed.

Mini Grants & Awards
Description
URECA accepts applications for mini awards of up to $500 for Stony Brook undergraduate researchers presenting at a professional meeting or conference; or up to $300 to undergraduates for the purchase of materials or supplies or to pay for other items related to their research or creative activities. (These grants are not to be used for the purchase of routine laboratory supplies/reagents). For conference presentation support, an applicant must be a co-author of a paper or poster presented at that meeting. Travel award recipients may use funds to join a professional society as a student member.
Please note that funding for the URECA Mini grants program is limited. Multiple students applying for support for the same project or related projects may receive smaller awards. Students who have previously received a Travel Grant from URECA may receive smaller awards or lower priority for funding, if applying for multiple awards in the same academic year.
How to Apply

For Conference awards: Applicants are encouraged to submit applications 2-3 weeks
prior to the date of the conference. Application requires upload of an abstract of
the project to be presented (~300 words); indication that the abstract has been accepted;
a resumé; unofficial transcript; and a letter of support from the research supervisor
For Mini grant/project support. Application includes a 250-word proposal describing
the research project/creative activity for which they seek support. This proposal
must indicate how the funds will be used and must include a budget. (If applicable,
list any other funding sources supporting the project); upload of an unofficial transcript.
(minimum GPA of 3.3 in major-related coursework recommended).
Award Amount
Up to $500 for conference award; up to $300 for individual project support. Update: These applications are closed for the 2025-2026 academic year. Applications for 2026-2027
will open on the first day of the Fall 2026 semester.
Description
The Jane & Armando Jannelli-URECA award, established in 2019, provides up to $1,000
to an undergraduate to help facilitate research projects at the intersection of Business
and Humanities . The project for which the student is requesting funds must be carried
out under the supervision of a Stony Brook faculty member.
Eligibility
This program is open to current Stony Brook undergraduates who are US Citizens and/or
permanent residents (*the proposed project/activity must be completed by the student
before graduation). Students with a major in the College of Business and/or a humanities
major in the College of Arts & Sciences, particularly juniors/seniors seeking honors
degrees in these fields, are especially encouraged to apply. A minimum GPA of 3.3
in major related coursework is recommended.
How to Apply
Please see application link below. Applicants should be prepared to upload:
- a 1-2 page proposal (up to 1000 words) describing the project/ activity for which they seek support, and should indicate how the funds will be used; and
- an transcript (unofficial).
Proposal: The proposal should clearly state how the project explores the application of humanities studies to business, or how the study of humanities is enhanced by understanding business models/practices. If applicable, the proposal may detail whether the project will be presented to the campus community (e.g. via a poster/talk--for ex. the campus URECA Celebration, or other venue). Please also specify whether the project is being used for completion of an honors thesis, and specify the time-frame of when the project will be completed. Budget section: the proposal should also include a breakdown outlining anticipated project related costs (if applicable). - Letter of recommendation: In addition, a letter of support from the student’s faculty supervisor is required. Scharps Legal Essay Competition- This SUNY-wide competition is open to juniors at
state-operated campuses who are interested in legal issues or are interested in pursuing
a career in the legal field. First place award of $1500. Please see for details on how to apply. (Applications/nomination process administered by URECA).
The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence (SUNY) & Provost's Award for Student Excellence (Stony Brook University) are prestigious awards for graduating seniors (application process administered by URECA).
