Overview of Animal Use

Oversight: 

Stony Brook University complies with all applicable provisions of the Animal Welfare Act and other Federal statutes and regulations relating to animals. This Institution is guided by the "U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training" As partial fulfillment of this responsibility, this Institution will ensure that all individuals involved in the care and use of laboratory animals understand their individual and collective responsibilities for compliance with applicable laws and regulations pertaining to animal care and use. This Institution has established and will maintain a program for activities involving animals according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide). This Institution agrees to ensure that all performance sites engaged in activities involving live vertebrate animals under consortium (subaward) or subcontract agreements have an Animal Welfare Assurance and that the activities have Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval. 

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is devoted to assuring the finest care and most humane use of our experimental animals.  The IACUC at Stony Brook is accredited through AAALAC International. The IACUC works closely with our faculty, students and staff to ensure that meaningful scientific research is conducted that:

  • avoids or minimizes discomfort, distress, and pain in experimental animals consistent with sound scientific practices
  • uses the minimum number of animals necessary to obtain valid results, and
  • considers non-animal models wherever possible
