Mallinckrodt Grant Program

The Office for Research and Innovation invites applications for the Mallinckrodt Grant Program,  which supports early-stage investigators engaged in basic and translational research that has the potential to make fundamental advances in biomedical science. Stony Brook University can submit ONE application. 

Please see below for details. If you are interested in applying, you must submit a pre-application via the Mallinckrodt Portal in InfoReady by Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 9:00 am. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document.

WHAT DOES IT FUND: This grant aims to support early-career scientists in establishing their research projects to a point where they can secure NIH R01 or other independent funding.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be in their first to fourth year of a tenure-track position
  • Hold an M.D. and/or Ph.D.
  • Must not currently hold a substantial independent research award, such as an NIH R01 grant or its equivalent in scope and funding from other sources.

AWARD: $75,000 per year for up to 3 years (Indirect cost are NOT allowed)

SPONSOR DEADLINE: July 1, 2026

A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:

  • Lay summary (no more than 2 pages, using 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font), which should be easily understood by a lay audience
  • Biosketch (no more than 5 pages in NIH format), which indicates when your tenure-track position began
  • Letter of Support from Department Chair
  • Budget and Budget Justification (no more than 1 page) that explains the necessity and specific use of each requested fund, demonstrating why these funds are needed for the project’s unique objectives
  • Current/pending research support
