Peer Mentoring Program

Peer Mentoring Program is offered by the Office of Global Affairs.

What is Peer Mentoring Program?

  • The Peer Mentoring Program is an international online mentoring community.
  • Stony Brook University is one of many institutions to provide support for new international students through mentorship.
  • This program matches students with a trained alumni/current students mentor based on common interests, background, academics, and professional aspirations.

    What is the International Student Peer Mentor Program?

    Peer Mentors are campus leaders who have demonstrated their commitment to diversity, recognize the contributions diversity brings to the work of the team, and dedicated to helping new international students have a good college experience. Peer mentors plays are a critical role in assisting new international student’s transition into the U.S. education system and Stony Brook University.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7.
    • Must complete at least 2 semesters at Stony Brook University. 
    • Must have a working knowledge of the services offered on campus and where to refer students for various queries.
    • Must be available to attend Peer Mentor training and meetings.
    • Must commit to the program for the full 2021-2022 academic year. 
    • Abide by a confidentiality agreement, maintaining confidentiality and respect for individual students' rights at all times.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong interpersonal skills, especially when communicating with people from different cultural background.
    • Strong desire to help new international students.
    • Self-motivation.

    General Expectations

      • Paired with at least 3 mentees, and must commit to the program for the full 2021-2022 academic year.
      • Must attend required training sessions.
      • Prompt response to all office communications (e.g., emails and Google Calendar invitations).
      • Available to communicate (phone, email, and/or in-person) with assigned new student mentees over summer 2021 and winter 2022, prior to their first semester, as well as throughout the remainder of the academic year.
      • If applied and selected as the Mentor Program Event Committee Member:        
        • Assist with preparation, face to face outreach, and facilitation of Peer Mentor Program Events (1 major event per semester).
        • Attend at least 3 major meetings in the semester regarding event planning with the Assistant Director.

          • Practical Competence: Pursuing goals, communicating effectively, technical competence, managing personal affairs, demonstrating professionalism.

        • Networking with University staff, mentors, and mentees.

    How do I apply?    

    The application process for mentees is currently closed   for New International students starting in the Spring 2021 semester.

      Major: Mathematics

      Lathania grew up in Montego Bay, Jamaica (with beautiful beaches and LOTS of sunshine).  She loves to play the flute, dance and sing. She is a warm and welcoming person who likes to have fun and study harder.

      Minal Chawla

      Minal Chawla

      Language: Hindi and Punjabi

      Major: Health Science with a minor in Journalism

      Minal loves playing badminton and binge-watching the legal drama Suits. She enjoys eating Indian and Mexican food (obsessed with Chipotle!). She also likes the summer season and sipping her favorite Taro bubble tea!

      Major: Health Science

      Sarah is from the sweet island of Trinidad and Tobago. She loves nothing more than taking trips to the beach, hiking trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls and occasionally binging a riveting TV show. She is currently on the pre-med track with aspirations of becoming a cardio-thoracic surgeon and finally seeing what its like to live a day in Meredith Grey's life. She wants her future mentees to know that no matter how tough, strange or challenging  things may seem right now, "You've got this! Your journey has just begun and your future is bright!"

      Lisa likes to ride her bike. In her spare time, she likes to learn new things (new programming language or the language of a country that she wants to visit). She also watches a lot of anime with her two brothers.

      Major: Higher Education Administration

      Lexi loves to travel: she has spent semesters abroad in Australia and France! She enjoys spending her free time at the beach, swimming, and paddle-boarding. She is a big foodie, and she is always looking for new restaurants to try. When she is at home, she is most often found re-watching New Girl, scrolling through Tik Tok, reading, or playing with her dog.

      Major: ISE/AMS

      Haruka is outgoing and enjoys spending time with friends. She likes traveling, trying new cuisines, and outdoor activities, like camping and skiing. She loves watching shows and movies, playing the piano, and cooking. Some of her favorite fast food places are Chipotle and Dunkin!

      Nayan plays the piano, paint, and dance. She truly believes to "Do everything with so much love in your heart that you would never wanna do it any other way". She loves getting caught in a good book and golden retrievers!

      After graduation, Ginger plans to attend nursing school and become a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner. She currently works at Near Me Dermatology as a medical assistant and at Stony Brook OBGYN as a medical scribe. Some of her interests are photography, strength training, and discovering new music on Spotify!

      Major: Business Management

      Yoon enjoys slow songs, sentimental gifts, and deep talks at 2 AM! She also loves good movies, short-walks, oceans, blue skies, and sunsets. She is a detail-oriented person who secretly likes to be carefree sometimes. She will say ‘yes’ to food and silly stories every single time. Taking care of her friends and making sure everyone is involved is her specialty.

      Rakshitha enjoys reading, watching movies, and sleeping. Her favorite artist currently is Mitski. She has a tiny cactus named Luie. She hopes to get a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology one day.
