I am interested in understanding the role of outer membrane vesicles and Type IV Pili in the pathogenesis of Fancisella sp. Using a combination of mutational and transmission electron microscopy analysis, I have identified links between central carbon metabolism and cysteine deprivation in the biogenesis of outer membrane vesicles. I am currently extending these findings to the fully virulent Francisella tularensis species working under BSL3 conditions. I have also explored the role of pilin genes in the formation and maintenance of Type IV pili on the cell surface. Apart from my research work, I am also actively involved in teaching undergraduates and graduate students in classroom and research lab settings.
