Deployment Checklist for Families
It can be difficult to know what you need to prepare before a loved one is deployed. The Honor Pack Seawolf Resource Group compiled a list of recommended actions you and your loved ones should consider.
Legal & Administrative
- Obtain general and specific Power of Attorney (POA)
- Update wills, living wills, and advance medical directives
- Check you Military ID's expiration date and ensure it is valid and DEERS information is current
- Keep certified copies of marriage license, birth certificates, and adoption papers
- Review and update insurance policies (life, medical, dental, renters/homeowners, auto)
- Ensure passports are current for all family members
Financial Readiness
- Ensure access to all joint bank accounts and online logins
- Review LES (Leave and Earnings Statement) for accuracy
- Set up automatic bill payments
- Maintain an emergency fund for 2-3 months of expenses
- Create a budget plan for deployment
Communication Plan
- Decide your preferred contact methods (email, apps, calls, letters)
- Purchase SIM cards or new cell phone on arrival
- Set realistic communication expectations
- Keep Family Readiness Group (FRG) or Ombudsman contact information
- Learn care package mailing rules and timelines
Home & Vehicle
- Schedule home and vehicle maintenance
- Have contacts for emergency repairs (plumber, electrician, mechanic)
- Keep spare keys with a trusted person
- Test home security systems
- Ensure vehicle registration is up to date
Medical & Family Care
- Know how to access Tricare and your Primary Care Manager (PCM)
- Add any family and friends who will be helping with the children to the authorized medical releases
- Keep medical records, immunization records, and prescriptions
- Arrange childcare and backup providers
- Add friends or family to the school pick-up and drop-off authorization lists
- Update school contact information
- Plan per care and backup pet care
Emotional & Social Support
- Connect with support networks (FRG, spouse groups)
- Attend any and all yellow ribbon pre-deployment events
- Schedule self-care activities
- Know counseling resources (Military OneSource, chaplain)
Emergency Information Binder
- Store POA and legal documents
- Keep copies of IDs and Insurance cards
- List unit contact information
- Include bank account and bill details
- Keep medical, home, and vehicle records
