Peer Tutor (Course-Based Tutoring) - FALL 2026

Position Description: 
Tutors help peers to succeed academically. They conduct tutoring sessions to clarify course content and provide study strategies. They are selected on the basis of academic skill, character, and the ability to communicate well with others.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University 
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Must have attained a B+ or better in the course at Stony Brook
  • Must be in good standing: No judicial or academic dishonesty charges
  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills and a desire to assist fellow students
  • Must provide a brief recommendation from the course instructor for each course that the student wishes to tutor

Approximate # of Hours: Varies; Students can expect to commit about 6-8 hours/week to this position, including required weekly training. 

Starting Pay Rate: $17.50/hour with pay increases available based on earned training certification level(s).

Accountability Group Peer Facilitator - FALL 2026

What is an accountability group?

Accountability groups are weekly focus sessions where students use social support and academic strategies to stay organized, define and reach their study goals, and build sustainable study habits. 

Key responsibilities of an accountability group peer facilitator include:

  • Session Facilitation: Prepare the study space and lead students in setting realistic, achievable goals at the start of each session.
  • Strategy Sharing: Introduce quick, evidence-based learning tips to help peers improve their study efficiency.
  • Academic Modeling: Demonstrate "active study" behaviors by working on your own course materials, modeling productivity for the group.
  • Administrative Oversight: Track attendance, maintain brief session notes, and coordinate with professional staff when students require specialized support.
  • Collaborative Growth: Attend bi-weekly meetings with professional staff and fellow peer facilitators to reflect on session dynamics and sharpen your facilitation toolkit.

Qualifications:

  • SBU Experience: Be an undergraduate student who has been at SBU for at least 2 semesters. You can apply while still in your second semester at Stony Brook.
  • Academic Standing: Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be in good academic and judicial standing at Stony Brook University.
  • Time Commitment: Be able to commit to 5-6 hours per week for accountability group sessions and administrative responsibilities, plus 1 hour for biweekly supervision meetings.
  • Leadership: Feel comfortable modeling positive behaviors and maintaining a focused atmosphere for others. 
  • Interpersonal Skills: Have the ability to facilitate small groups and explain study strategies clearly and encouragingly.
  • Reliability: Have the ability to maintain a consistent work schedule and keep organized administrative records. 

Compensation: $17.50/hour

Start Date: Week of August 24, 2026 (Beginning of fall 2026 semester)

Important Note: The first two weeks of the semester will require less than the stated 5-6 hours. A two-hour training session will take place during the first or second week of classes, with accountability group meetings beginning the third week of classes.
