Applying for Graduation


Students must apply for graduation in order to have their degree awarded and diploma issued.

Eligibility Requirements

For undergraduate students to apply for graduation, the student must:

  • Be a senior (U4 standing)
  • Have a declared major on record
  • Have at least 105 completed and/or in-progress credits

How to Apply

  • Navigate to SOLAR under Manage Classes -> Submit a graduation application through SOLAR
  • Refer to the Academic Calendar for application deadlines
  • Students can only apply for graduation once, any changes that need to be made must be done through Changing a Graduation Date process.

If the student misses the SOLAR deadline:

  • The student must request an Undergraduate Graduation Application through the Registrar’s Office
  • The Graduation staff will review the student’s record to determine eligibility
  • This application is not available online and is issued only by the Registrar’s Office

Changing a Graduation Date

The student may submit a Graduation Date Change request to update their expected graduation term.

  • Available for West Campus undergraduate students only
  • The Registrar’s Office will review the request and notify the student if additional action is required

Commencement

As part of the graduation application process, the student will indicate their participation in commencement.

The student may choose to attend:

  • The University-wide Commencement ceremony
  • A department or school ceremony
  • Both ceremonies or neither

Students may participate in the May Commencemt ceremony if they:

  • Graduated in the prior summer or fall, or
  • Plan to graduate in the upcoming summer or fall
    Participation in commencement is optional and separate from degree completion.

Important:
 Participating in the ceremony does not mean the degree has been awarded.

Awarding of Degrees

Degrees are awarded after final review of the student’s academic record.

  • Degree review occurs after the semester ends, typically 2–3 weeks after the close of the semester
  • The Registrar’s Office reviews and awards degrees for West Campus undergraduate students
  • Graduate, Health Sciences, and SPD students should contact their respective programs

  • General education requirements (DEC/SBC)
  • At least 100 graded credits
  • A minimum of:
  • 120 total credits (BA/BS, Journalism BA)
  • 128 total credits (BE degrees)
  • 39 upper-division credits
  • 36 credits in residence
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00


Additional Notes

  • Academic departments approve major, minor, and specialization requirements
  • Degrees are awarded on a rolling basis (twice per week)
  • All coursework must be complete
    • Degrees cannot be awarded with incomplete or in-progress grades (I, IP, R)
