International Student Success

International Student Success (ISS) runs the International Student Center and offers programs, workshops, services, and opportunities to help international students achieve their academic and personal goals during their time at Stony Brook University.

 

International Student Center

The International Student Center (ISC) is a gathering space for international students. It provides a one-stop shop to connect international students with resources and information, as well as an event space for workshops. 

Hours: M-Th: 10a-7p and Fridays: 10a-5p

Location: Room S-1450, Melville Library

 

Workshops & Events

ISS hosts many workshops on academic and personal success to support international students as they transition to Stony Brook University.

-iCafe & iGrad Success Workshops: iCafe and iGrad are academic and student services workshops led by faculty and experts in those fields. (Example topic: Public Speaking & Presentations) 

-Global CommuniTEA (Center for Prevention & Outreach Engaged): Weekly discussions about culture and community in a relaxed environment with snacks and tea. (Example topic: Language and Emotions)

-International Student Campus Lifetime (Office of Global Affairs Engaged): Monthly event for international students to socialize with one another with free lunch, crafts, snacks, and raffle prizes!

-International Education Week: Annual event with a series of programs for faculty, staff, and students to expand their global awareness and celebrate contributions from around the world!

 

Services & Resources

ISS helps connect international students to services and resources throughout campus.

 

-International Student Handbook: One stop for housing information, arrival, meal plans, where to eat, campus resources, transportation, campus map, and more.

-International Student Center Writing Tutors: Writing tutoring available for undergraduate and graduate students for essay structure and content/writing clarity.

-International Student Success Tutors: Tutors help international students navigate academic and cultural challenges in the new educational environment, such as language and cultural acclimation and the U.S. Education system.

-International Peer Mentor Program (IPM): IPM provides support for new undergraduate international students through mentorship.

-International Family and Friends Program (IFFP): IFFP creates opportunities for international students and the surrounding community to establish mutually rewarding relationships.

 

Student Leadership Opportunities

ISS encourages students to be leaders for their and future cohorts. Take advantage of the following opportunities:

-International Student Advisory Council (ISAC): Brings together a diverse representation of international students at Stony Brook University to communicate the needs and challenges of international students.

-Summer Global Student Ambassador (GSA): GSAs help welcome and support incoming and short-term international students to Stony Brook University during the Office of Global Affairs’ Global Summer Institute.

-International Peer Mentors: Students can apply to become a mentor to guide international students through their academic experience.

-ISS Student Assistants (OAs): Working directly in the International Student Center, OAs help with office management, assisting international students, and our large/small-scale events.
