WUSB Radio Station
WUSB Radio Station, 90.1 and 107.3 FM, is located in the West Side Dining Building. The station features three fully equipped broadcast studios, editing studios, an
engineering space, and a student office. The station includes fully digital audio
broadcast consoles, microphones, vinyl turntables, CD players, and iMac computers.
The FM station is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to the State
University of New York at Stony Brook. It serves as an Emergency Alert System (EAS)
relay center for the state.
WUSB Radio broadcasts 24/7/365.
WUSB is managed by a General Manager, run by Student Directors and licensed to the SUNY board of trustees. The radio station facility is overseen and supported by the Department of Student Community Development’s Student Media Services office and by the registered student organization, WUSB. The entire station is staffed by a volunteer staff of students, alumni, staff and community member affiliates of Stony Brook University.
Any student may join WUSB’s club and participate in general body meetings and other student centered radio events and programs. Students may receive academic internship credits for participating in WUSB. All volunteers are welcome. There are some paid student positions which help support WUSB’s day to day operations in the Student media Office.
The station began in 1962 as a carrier current station, broadcasting only within the
confines of the then-new Stony Brook campus on 820 kHz on the AM band. The station
was, at the time, an integral part of Stony Brook University's once lively concert
scene. The FCC granted WUSB a license to begin broadcasting in 1977, signing on as
an FM station for the first time on June 27, 1977, at 5:30 in the afternoon.
As the major university center on Long Island, and a flagship institution across the
state system, WUSB Radio offers the potential of unlimited reach, not only to the
local licensed broadcasting area but worldwide through internet streaming platforms.
Many campus entities currently utilize the radio station to reach the community, at
large, including but not limited to Seawolves Sports, Stony Brook University Medical
Center, Long Island Veterans Home, Staller Center for the Arts, etc.
In 2017, WUSB moved into a new facility and also began broadcasting on 107.3FM, where
listeners can tune in for a better signal across the campus footprint. In 2022, the
station upgraded its EAS software to meet Federal Communications Commission requirements.
In 2023, WUSB upgraded its transmitter and telecommunications system, and in 2024
upgraded its broadcasting technology to meet current communications standards from
T1 phone lines to E-Line ethernet lines.
