Relationship Statement
Student media, such as student-produced radio, newspapers, literary or opinion magazines or journals, video, and film, shall remain free of censorship and prior review of copy from University administration.
Editors, managers, and directors are free to develop their own editorial policies.Good
journalism requires a commitment to an ethical, professional, and transparent relationship
between student journalists and their subjects. It typically outlines boundaries,
such as not reporting on groups the student is personally involved with, and a pledge
to uphold journalistic standards like seeking truth and avoiding conflicts of interest.
Editors, managers, and directors of student media are protected from arbitrary suspension
and removal from office because of student, faculty, administrative, or public disapproval
of editorial policy or content. Only for proper and stated causes are editors and
managers subject to removal, and then by orderly and prescribed procedures. All student
media must explicitly state that the opinions therein expressed are not necessarily
those of the College community.
The freedom given to student editors, managers, directors and other student contributors
requires adherence to published codes of ethics and laws of responsible journalism and reporting. (e.g., the avoidance of libel,
copyright infringement, indecency, undocumented allegations, attacks on personal integrity,
harassment, and slanderous innuendo.) The Student Media Services team regularly provides
education on these standards.
Allegations and founded violations of the items noted above shall be addressed via
proper University channels, based on the Code of Student Responsibility and Recognized Student Organization policies.
