International Research
International research is an essential component of the University's research mission. The Office of Research Security (ORS) administers the University's International Engagement Program, helping faculty, staff, and students identify research security, sponsor, institutional, and other requirements that may apply to international research activities.
International research may involve collaborations, foreign-sponsored research, international visitors, international travel, international agreements, international data sharing, and other cross-border activities. ORS provides guidance and reviews throughout the research lifecycle to support responsible, transparent, and secure international research.

University International Engagement Program & Policy
The University's Policy on International Engagements affirms Stony Brook University's commitment to international research and collaboration while establishing a framework for reviewing activities that may present elevated research security, national security, export control, or other institutional risks.
The policy identifies heightened risks that may arise in international engagements, including Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs, High Risk Entities, sanctioned or embargoed countries, Countries of Concern, and Critical and Emerging Technologies. The policy establishes requirements for identifying, reviewing, mitigating, or avoiding these risks, as applicable.
ORS administers the University's International Engagement Program and coordinates policy implementation with other University offices.

Federal research sponsors have implemented research security requirements to promote transparency, protect research integrity, and safeguard federally funded research.
ORS maintains sponsor-specific guidance to help investigators understand proposal, award, and post-award requirements, disclosure obligations, certifications, award conditions, and other research security expectations.
