Publication & Presentation Disclosure Statements
Overview
Researchers are responsible for disclosing financial interests, outside professional activities, and other relationships when required by journals, publishers, conference organizers, sponsors, or professional organizations.
Disclosure requirements vary among journals, conferences, and professional societies. Investigators should carefully review the applicable author instructions or disclosure policies before submitting a manuscript, abstract, presentation, poster, or other scholarly work.
When a conflict of interest or other reportable relationship has been identified and managed by the University, investigators should ensure that required disclosures are complete, accurate, and consistent with applicable sponsor, journal, and institutional requirements.
What May Need to Be Disclosed
Depending on the publication or presentation, disclosures may include:
- Equity or stock ownership
- Consulting relationships
- Advisory board or board memberships
- Honoraria
- Research funding
- Sponsored research agreements
- Equipment, software, or material support
- Intellectual property interests
- Leadership positions
- Other financial or professional relationships relevant to the work being presented
Sample Disclosure Statements
The following examples are provided for illustration only. Investigators should modify the language as appropriate to reflect their individual circumstances and comply with the disclosure requirements of the applicable journal, publisher, conference, or sponsor.
Research Funding and Financial Interest
The author receives research funding from [Sponsor] and has a financial interest in [Company] through [equity ownership, consulting, advisory board service, etc.].
Consulting Relationship
The author serves as a consultant to [Company] and conducts research in areas related to the company's business activities.
Advisory Board or Board Membership
The author serves on the Scientific Advisory Board (or Board of Directors) of [Company], whose activities are related to the subject matter of this publication.
Research Funding with Related Financial Interest
This research was supported by [Funding Agency or Sponsor]. The author also has a financial interest in [Company], whose products or technologies are related to the research described in this publication.
Institutional Financial Interest
Stony Brook University has a financial interest in [Company], which sponsored the research described in this publication. The University's interest has been managed in accordance with applicable institutional policies.
Equipment or Material Support
This research was supported by [Funding Source]. [Company] also provided equipment, materials, or other research support used in this study. The author has a [consulting/equity/advisory] relationship with the company.

- Sponsor disclosure requirements
- Conflict of Interest reporting
- Conflict of Commitment reporting
- Financial Conflict of Interest reporting to federal sponsors
