Policy Statement & Background:
Stony Brook University has a vital interest in maintaining a respectful, safe, healthy,
and clean community for all students, employees, and visitors. In an effort to embrace
such values, the University is committed to providing an environment that is tobacco-free
and free from secondhand smoke.
Stony Brook University is committed to providing a tobacco-free environment for a
number of reasons, including:
- Promoting respect for others and the environment
- Enhancing campus health and wellness
- Complementing campus sustainability efforts
- Lowering institutional costs that result from cleaning, maintenance, and damage caused by the use of tobacco products
Policy:
In keeping with the University's desire to provide a respectful, safe, healthy, and clean environment for all students, employees, and visitors, the use of tobacco products is not permitted at Stony Brook. No forms of tobacco use are allowed on University property. This includes all indoor and outdoor locations. The use of tobacco is also prohibited in all University vehicles, which includes buses, vans, cars, and trucks. The sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products is prohibited anywhere on University property, and tobacco advertisements must not be publicly displayed at the University. Stony Brook University Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved research is exempt from this policy.
Compliance
- All students, faculty, staff, vendors, volunteers, and visitors are expected to comply with this policy.
- University leaders, supervisors, and building managers are expected to support individuals that are seeking to become tobacco-free by making appropriate referrals and to inform/promote compliance in their area(s) of responsibility.
- Notice of this policy will be posted throughout the University, as appropriate.

The University acknowledges the addictive nature of tobacco and recognizes the extraordinary challenge of breaking its use. The University is committed to making every effort to assist and encourage those who struggle with tobacco use. Information on smoking/tobacco cessation, is available at:

Definitions:
Tobacco: includes all tobacco and tobacco-derived products intended for human consumption, including, but not limited to: cigarettes (e.g., clove, bidis, kreteks), electronic cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, hookah-smoked products, oral and smokeless tobacco (e.g., dip, chew, snuff, spit). This definition does not include any product that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a tobacco cessation product.
Visitors: includes any person that visits the University and may include: alumni, contractors, guests, subcontractors, vendors, and volunteers.
