Agnese Di Riccio

Agnese Di Riccio received her PhD from the Department of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research, with a dissertation titled “Social Imaginaries at the End: Imagination, Nature, and Practices under the Environmental Crisis” (2026). She holds a joint MA and BA in Philosophy from Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa, Italy) and the University of Pisa (Italy) and was a visiting researcher at the University of Warwick and Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2018.

She specializes in environmental philosophy and social and political philosophy, with a historical focus on philosophies of imagination and a thematic focus on the challenges raised by the ongoing ecological crisis. Her current research project reconceptualizes 20th-century notions of the “social imaginary” to engage with current debates about the nature of social transformation in the Anthropocene and to explore which ecological imaginaries might offer resources for addressing the present crisis, in conversation with ecofeminism, Black environmentalism, and political ecology.

Beyond environmental philosophy, she has interests in post-Kantian philosophy and French and German traditions of social and political philosophy. She has published a monograph on Hegel’s theory of cognition (Pisa ETS, 2018), various essays on Hegel’s notions of imagination, experience, and recognition, and articles on Frankfurt School Critical Theory and the thought of Cornelius Castoriadis.
