JAMES AUSTIN SMITH: Hearing MEMOry
February 27th, 7:30PM – Recital Hall
Oboist James Austin Smith brings his musical-historical project, Hearing Memory, to Stony Brook exploring music lost to the 'end of history’. Through documentary interviews, story-telling and musical performance, Smith and Cologne Music Conservatory oboe professor Christian Wetzel reflect on the complicated legacy of the daring classical music scene that emerged in the 1970s in East Germany, offering a powerful example of musicians creating meaning beyond sound.
Smith and Wetzel honor the spirit of cross-border creativity, telling the story of these intrepid musicians and performing Ovid-inspired music of Georg Katzer and Friedrich Goldmann alongside new works from Matana Roberts and Bernd Franke.
