Welcome to the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook University.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to a department that is deeply committed to excellence in education, research, and innovation. We offer graduate programs leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical and Molecular Engineering, as well as two ABET-accredited undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Engineering Science and Chemical and Molecular Engineering.

A defining feature of all our programs is the close integration of research with education. Our students, faculty, and staff collaborate across disciplines to address some of the most pressing scientific and technological challenges of our time. This spirit of innovation and collaboration is at the heart of everything we do.

Our faculty are internationally recognized leaders in their fields, and their achievements reflect the strength of our department. Among our ranks are a National Medal of Technology recipient, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Jefferson Science Fellow, four NSF CAREER awardees, a DOE Early Career awardee, and three SUNY Distinguished Professors.

Research within the department is thriving. In 2024 alone, our faculty research expenditure exceeded over $13 million, placing us among the highest in per capita research funding at the university. Our work spans advanced areas such as energy storage and conversion, catalysis, computational materials science, structural and nuclear materials, polymers, microelectronics, and thermal spray technologies.

Our department is home to several world-class research centers, including:

We maintain strong partnerships with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), providing our students and faculty with access to facilities like the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN). Through the New York State Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR), we collaborate with industry on high-impact research that translates innovation into application.

Our Engineering Science undergraduate program offers students the flexibility to tailor their studies with specializations in biotechnology, materials science, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, and more. The program equips students with a strong foundation in science and engineering while preparing them for diverse careers and advanced study.

Our Chemical and Molecular Engineering undergraduate program is designed for those interested in molecular-level engineering with applications in nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, energy, and environmental solutions. The curriculum combines rigorous training in the physical sciences with core engineering principles, promoting teamwork, creativity, and ethical responsibility.

Our students are the driving force behind our success. They routinely earn competitive awards such as NSF Graduate Fellowships, Distinguished Doctoral Thesis Awards, and honors at national conferences. Our graduates go on to thrive in academia, industry, law, business, and medicine.

I encourage you to explore our website to learn more about our programs, research, and the vibrant community that defines our department. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

We look forward to welcoming you to our department and hope you will join us in shaping the future of materials and chemical engineering.

Warm regards,
