SBU Emergency Procedures
In case of an emergency:
- First, contact local emergency services.
- Then contact the Stony Brook University Police Department at 631-632-3333.
If you are the victim of a crime:
- First, contact the local police to file a report. Retain any case/incident number.
- Second, contact the nearest U.S Embassy or Consulate.
- Then contact Enterprise Risk Management via telephone at 631-632-9500 or via email at ermtravel@stonybrook.edu.
If you are arrested or detained:
- Ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately.
- Ask the U.S. Embassy to notify the Stony Brook University Police Department.
- For non-emergency concerns while traveling abroad, contact Enterprise Risk Management via telephone at 631-632-9500 or via email at ermtravel@stonybrook.edu.
Emergency Numbers: Travelers should strongly consider programming their mobile phone with appropriate emergency numbers.
Public locations and resources may be targeted by attackers to transfer the information that you send to their unauthorized networks or systems.
- Do not connect to free WiFi hotspots at untrusted locations. Avoid using them whenever possible and never access sensitive data while connected to one.
- Disable wireless and bluetooth when not in use.
- Connect to the campus VPN before accessing campus resources.
- While browsing the web, never ignore a warning message regarding a website's SSL security certificate being invalid.
- Never charge your device using publicly available charging cables or publicly available USB ports.
- Use complex, lengthy, and hard-to-guess passwords.
