Stony Brook University Partners With Honeywell To Reduce Energy Use

“Stony Brook Red” will be getting a whole lot greener as Stony Brook University has partnered with Honeywell Building Solutions to reduce University energy consumption. Starting in fall 2014, the Department of Energy Management and Honeywell Building Solutions have begun an energy reduction project which consists of installing interior energy efficient fluorescent lighting, LED technology, lighting occupancy controls as well as installing building efficiency equipment.
The project involves retrofitting a total of 55,000 interior light fixtures with long life energy efficient lamps and adding a total of 5,000 occupancy sensors – which serve to control lights automatically when rooms are unoccupied. Given the projects’ scope and magnitude, it is estimated to continue through the duration of the 2014-15 academic year and the following University buildings are included in the project; Administration, the Biotechnology Building, Central Receiving, Challenger Hall, Center for Molecular Medicine, Computer Science, Computing Center, Dana Hall, Discovery Hall, Dutchess Hall, Earth & Space Sciences, East Plant, Educational Communications Center, Endeavor Hall, Graduate Chemistry Building, Harriman Hall, Heavy Engineering, Humanities, Javits Lecture Hall, Life Sciences, Light Engineering, Math Tower, Melville Library, Nassau Hall, Old Engineering, Physics, Pritchard Gym, Psychology, Putnam Hall, Rockland Hall, Service Group, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Staller Center, Student Activities Center, Student Health Center, Suffolk Hall and Sullivan Hall. In addition to lighting, buildings in South Campus will receive heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system upgrades.
This initiative is part of Stony Brook University’s goal to reduce its’ carbon footprint, mitigate impact on the natural environment and reduce energy consumption to meet New York State Executive Order 88. “The University’s lighting and HVAC efficiency project is an excellent example of a collaborative approach to save energy. The Department of Energy Management spends time evaluating cost effective measures to save energy and with this project, worked with our Administration, Honeywell Building Solutions and the greater campus community to move the project forward.” stated Tom Lanzilotta, Campus Energy Manager. “At this point in time, we are coordinating efforts with building managers and installation crews in order to install the energy efficient upgrades.”
The lighting and HVAC efficiency project with Honeywell Building Solutions is just one of a variety of different energy efficiency initiatives the Department of Energy Management has embarked upon. Examples of other projects include a partnership with Sempra Electric, which was later taken over by Honeywell Building Solutions, to install more than $35 million in energy conservation measures around campus. The Department of Energy Management is also responsible for lighting efficiency upgrades in various parking lots, enhancing computer energy use settings, decreasing heat loss by installing pipe and valve insulation, improving energy metering technology as well as improving building envelopes to address efficiency.
