Graduate Awards

The Sociology Department proudly recognizes graduate students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, research engagement, and contributions to the intellectual life of the department through annual awards and honors.

The Judith Tanur Sociology Dissertation Fellowship Award is presented each summer to a Ph.D. candidate who is in the research or writing phase of a doctoral dissertation.  The $4,000 award is designed to provide financial support at an important time in the research or writing process, and is to be used to increase time devoted to the dissertation in lieu of pursuing a salary through teaching or other work.

Three Graduate Student Paper Awards are granted annually to Sociology Ph.D students:

  • The David Street Award is given to the author of an outstanding paper that uses qualitative methods to empirically evaluate one or more sociological theories.
  • The Hanan Selvin Award is given to the author of an outstanding paper that uses quantitative methods to empirically evaluate one or more sociological theories.
  • The Rose Laub Coser Award is given to the author of an outstanding paper that advances existing sociological theory, introduces a new sociological theory, advances existing methodology, and/or introduces a new methodology.

This endowed award will provide an annual $500 cash award to a  full-time graduate student who is in strong academic standing as defined by Stony Brook policy and who demonstrates achievement, experience or commitment to academic excellence, leadership or community service as reported through the application process.
