I joined Stony Brook as Alfonse M. D’Amato Chair in Italian American and Italian Studies in September 2020. My work sits at the intersection of language education, translation, multilingualism and mobility studies. I have written on travel writing, colonial and postcolonial literature, migrant and diasporic cultures, translingualism and self-translation. My current research focuses on memory, mobility and translation in transnational Italian cultures, with specialist interests in Italian American studies, the interface between translation and the visual arts, and the role of translation in building inclusive communities and promoting social justice. With Rita Wilson, I am co-editor of leading international journal The Translator. I am also one of the founding editors of the ‘Transnational Modern Languages’ book series, published by Liverpool University Press, as well as the current President of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS). While at Cardiff University, I led a small team of colleagues who created and taught the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) ‘Working with Translation: Theory and Practice’, which aims to sensitize specialists and users to the role of translation and interpreting in multilingual societies.
