Awards and Scholarships
The application deadline for all Hispanic Heritage Month Awards and Scholarships is
MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2026. Winners will be announced at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Ceremony
on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

**Eligibility for all awards and scholarships is regardless of citizenship status.**

Student Awards and Scholarships
Sanchez Construction Corporation Scholarship for Undergraduate Academic Achievement
Purpose: To recognize a full-time registered undergraduate student enrolled at Stony
Brook University who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, scholarly
promise, and service and leadership to the community. This $2,500 award is offered
through the Latin American & Caribbean Studies Center.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
* Full-time registered undergraduate Stony Brook University students
* Junior year or first semester of their senior year
* Majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences
* Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Ana Maria Torres Scholarship
Purpose: The Ana Maria Torres Scholarship Fund for Stony Brook University students
will provide $500 of scholarship support to a qualified undergraduate student who
demonstrates great potential towards significant contributions to the Hispanic/Latino
community through their leadership.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must:
* Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Stony Brook University
* Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
* Demonstrate leadership qualities and commitment to the Hispanic/Latine community
RaFAELA LUNA Memorial Scholarship Award
Purpose: This memorial scholarship was created by Dora Maria Abreu (SBU Alum BS '90,
MS '91) in honor of her mother, who passed away from breast cancer. This scholarship
will be given to a student in the sciences who has demonstrated outstanding academic
accomplishments and has served others in the Latino community, much like her mother
did.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must:
* Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Stony Brook University
* Majoring in the sciences
* Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
* Academic excellence, leadership qualities, and significant service to the Hispanic/Latine
community
HHM Community Service Award
Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
who has taken time to serve the Latine community and whose presence and kindness have
had a positive impact on the university.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
* Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook
University
* Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
HHM Academic Award
Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in all subjects and is active
in the Latine and campus community.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
* Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook
University
* Have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
HHM Leadership Award
Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
who has assumed a leadership role(s) in any Stony Brook recognized society, club,
sorority, fraternity, or association that serves the Latine community.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
* Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
* Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
HHM Emerging Pioneer Award (new)
Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
who has demonstrated groundbreaking campus contributions and is currently paving the
way for the Hispanic and Latinx community.
Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
* Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook
University
Mariposa Conference Award (for Graduate Students)
During Fall 2026, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) program is instituting the Mariposa Conference Award for a non-citizen graduate student. The award supports conference presentation travel for graduate students ineligible for many U.S. funding opportunities.
The selected student will receive $500–$1000, which LACS will use to cover airfare, hotel, and related conference expenses. The award is open to all disciplines; however, applicants must be presenting at the conference, not only attending. Recipient status will remain confidential. Funds may be used through the end of the 2026–2027 academic year.

The Mariposa Undergraduate Education Award
The Mariposa Education Award is a $500-$1,000 award for books and other educational
materials given to two SBU undergrads of an immigration status (undocumented, DACA,
international) who are deemed ineligible for many US scholarships. Status will remain
confidential, and LACS will purchase the students' materials for them. The award will
be usable through the end of the 2025-26 academic year. Major and minor concentrations
are open.
Applications are due by October 19, 2026.
Faculty and Staff Awards
HHM Faculty/Staff Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize a Stony Brook University Faculty or Staff
member who has demonstrated outstanding contributions, service, outreach, and commitment
to the Latine community.
Godparent Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize a Stony Brook University Faculty or Staff member who has contributed to the quality of life, educational growth, and development of Latine students, and who has also served as a mentor and guide in all aspects of student life. In the Latin American tradition, the godparent (madrina or padrino) is a title given to a person who serves as a second parent and agrees to contribute to your child’s upbringing. Students should nominate faculty and staff candidates for this award.
HHM Latine Faculty Recognition Award
The purpose of this award is to pay tribute to a faculty member whose experience and
work has served this academic institution, as well as to honor their contributions
to the university and primarily students of Hispanic/Latine descent.
The application deadline for all Hispanic Heritage Month Awards and Scholarships is October 19, 2026, no later than 11:59 PM. Winners will be announced at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Donations
During Hispanic Heritage Month (October), we recognize the contributions of Hispanics
and Latinos and celebrate their heritage and culture. September and October are filled
with various events, programs, prominent guest speakers, and academic scholarships.
Additionally, initiatives supporting the Hispanic and Latin American community at
Stony Brook University are also planned throughout the year. This is all made possible
by generous contributions. We welcome and encourage your support to keep Hispanic
Heritage Month and other initiatives an important presence at Stony Brook.
