WELCOME to Center for Thermal Spray Research (CTSR)
The Center for Thermal Spray Research (CTSR) at Stony Brook University was established in 1996 through the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers program. Since its inception, the CTSR has been at the heart of a number of exciting fundamental sciences and applied engineering initiatives to enhance the scientific base of thermal spray (TS) coating technology.
Center for Thermal Spray Reseach Completes 25 Successful Years!
Over the last decade, the Center has continued to push both fundamental boundaries as well as to expand engineering opportunities. Notable areas of continued scientific enquiry include: mechanics and physics of layered structures, hybrid architectures, combining ceramics with metals and polymers for damage tolerance, functional oxides with unique functionalities.
CTSR receives the 2022 JTST Outstanding Review Award for 2022 for the paper titled "Critical Analysis of the Tensile Adhesion Test"
Coauthored by Shalaka Shinde and Prof.Sampath, the paper examines the advantages and pitfalls of the ASTM C633 test. Comment from the Award committee:
Shinde's and Sampath's contribution takes a critical look at a practically very important characterization method in the field of thermal spraying. In an outstanding way, they not only compile data available in the literature in the sense of a review, but also usefully supplement it to a considerable extent with their own experiments. This allows a comprehensive presentation as well as some clear recommendations, which are very valuable for our industry
This paper is very timely given the change in the industry standard developing due to the discontinuation of FM1000 adhesive.
ITSA Student Recognition
CTSR students continue to recieve the International Thermal Spray Association Scholarship, a tradition dating back to the 1990's. Recent awardees include Donald McMahon, Emma Peleg, Carl Schmidt, John Saputo, Edward Gildersleeve, Shalaka Shinde and others. We are grateful to ITSA for their continue support in building the next generation of thermal spray scientists and engineers.
CTSR Hosts "Bridging Generations in Thermal Spray Technology" Workshop
Coincident with the silver jubilee of the Center establishment, the 20th anniversary of the Consortium, CTSR hosted a unique workshop to connect generations of thermal spray researchers. CTSR invited several of our seniors to Stony Brook as part of the consortium event to share their experiences and perspectives in thermal spray technology. We were pleased that many highly accomplished colleagues attended, presented and contributed to a highly successful event.
2019 Editor’s Choice article in the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology
The manuscript titled “Characteristics of Conventional and Cascaded Arc Plasma Spray-Deposited Ceramic Under Standard and High-Throughput Conditions” has been selected as one of the five Editor’s Choice articles for 2019 from the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology.
CTSR Completes 25 Successful years!
The roots of the thermal spray program at Stony Brook date back to the mid-1970s, when then graduate student, the late Volker Wilms, suggested to his advisor Prof. Herman that plasma spray technology would be a great way to rapidly quench oxides to explore metastability. This led to establishment of the “glove box” plasma spray equipment in the basement of the engineering building shown below.
