Journalism Without Walls
This year's destination is Berlin, Germany. The program will run from May 23–June 6, 2026.
In 2025, students traveled to Sweden with Professor Sarah Baxter, Director of the Marie Colvin Center.
All travel and accommodation expenses are funded by the Marie Colvin Center.
CSIS Journalism Bootcamp
The student-produced investigation, At Arm's Length: Military Technology Cooperation Within The Russia-Iran Partnership, explores the evolving military-technology cooperation between Russia and Iran, and its geopolitical implications.
The multimedia project incorporates an article, graphics, video and podcast. Students connected with international security and policy experts at the May 2026 Center for Strategic and International Studies bootcamp in Washington, D.C.
Marie Colvin Fellowship
A competitive program that gives a graduating senior a chance to work for an overseas news outlet.
The 12-week paid internship is open to graduating bachelor's or master's journalism students.

Previous Trips
Sweden 2025
Students spent the spring semester investigating gender equality initiatives with particular emphasis on developments in Sweden. Over the two-week reporting trip from May 24–June 7, 2025, students worked on joint and individual projects. Students identified stories, undertook research, and cultivated sources for their reporting. Travel and accommodation expenses were provided by the Journalism Without Walls program. This is the SoCJ's overseas reporting opportunity. During the weeks-long program, students travel with faculty to experience and report on life in different cultures around the globe. All travel and accommodation expenses are funded by the Marie Colvin Center.
The trip takes place during summer or winter break, and requires students to take a 3-credit, on-campus course to learn about the country they'll be traveling to and to begin to lay the groundwork for finding and reporting stories.
This selective program is offered in partnership with the Stony Brook Study Abroad Office.
