Chemical Biology

The Interface Between Chemistry and Biology

The Chemical Biology faculty are using their chemical expertise to explore biological phenomena. Their research programs include studies of enzyme mechanisms, drug discovery, protein folding, amyloid deposition, cellular receptors, and macromolecular structure determination. Novel biosynthetic and chemical strategies are being used to synthesize small molecules for use in probing enzyme mechanisms, exploring ligand-receptor interactions and in treating disease. Chemistry hosts the Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/icbdd//), a “center of excellence” dedicated to bridging fundamental and translational research efforts across east and west campus. In addition, Chemistry faculty direct a NIH funded Chemical Biology Training Program (https://www.stonybrook.edu/cbtp/). The overall goals of this program are (i) to produce successful, independent, professional, rigorous, and ethical PhD scientists trained at the interface of chemistry and biology and (ii) to maintain a scientific research environment that is inclusive and supportive of trainee development. Together these two programs highlight the vibrant interdisciplinary chemical biology community that exists at SBU.
