SBU researchers explore how artificial intelligence can transform healthcare

Researchers at SBU see AI as a powerful tool for advancing medical discovery. Chenyu You, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, uses AI to improve biomedical imaging. His work reconstructs CT and MRI scans to better distinguish healthy tissue from unhealthy tissue. Tengfei Ma, an assistant professor in CEAS, noted key differences between AI and clinical interpretation. “Humans use their experiences,” Ma said. “AI doesn’t know what it is doing. It is asked or uses data. It needs a lot of training data to learn patterns.”
