Risk and Resistance: How Feminists Transformed the Law and Science of AIDS | Sir Run Run Shaw Lecture Series with Aziza Ahmed Monday, March 2nd, 2026 | 5:00-6:30 pm Humanities Institute 1008, SBU How did women come to be seen as 'at-risk' for HIV? In the early years of the AIDS crisis, scientific and public health experts questioned whether women were likely to contract HIV in significant numbers and rolled out a response that effectively excluded women. In her book, Risk and Resistance: How Feminists Transformed the Law and Science of AIDS, Aziza Ahmed shows that it was the work of feminist lawyers and activists who altered the legal and public health response to the AIDS epidemic. Aziza Ahmed is Professor of Law and N. Neal Pike Scholar at Boston University School of Law. She is the co-founder and co-director of the Boston University Program on Reproductive Justice. Davis "Pens Not Property: Edward Said and Sylvia Wynter on Forms of Life" Thursday November 13th, 2025 | 4:00 pm Philosophy Department, 214 Harriman Hall This talk begins from the question of property in Edward Said's last interview. It then asks: What is the role of property within Sylvia Wynter's reading of "the horizon of humanity" in Jacques Derrida? Ultimately, this talk considers Said and Wynter together in offering an inquiry into the forms of life we have inherited and live within today. Followed by reception and dinner 218 Harriman Hall. All welcome! Benjamin P. Davis is an Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M University. He is also a fellow at the Center on Modernity in Transition, a think tank advancing conversations on planetary social change, and President of the American Weil Society, a scholarly organization devoted to studying the mystic and philosopher Simone Weil. Davis is the author of three books: Simone Weil’s Political Philosophy: Field Notes from the Margins, from 2023, as well as Choose Your Bearing: Édouard Glissant, Human Rights, and Decolonial Ethics, also from 2023, which is the prequel to this year’s Another Humanity: Decolonial Ethics from Du Bois to Arendt. USAID was the United States’ and the world’s primary distributor of foreign development and humanitarian aid. Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE’s) cuts to the agency suddenly ended life-saving services such as maternal health and anti-retro viral treatments, impacting millions across the globe. That said, USAID’s legacy is complex. As part of the Fall 2025 Visiting Artist Series, the Department of Sociology and the Center for Changing Systems of Power are thrilled to welcome Dean Arlen and Adele Todd to Stony Brook University. Over a 12-day residency titled THE ROOM, Staller Center Theater 1 will transform into a living exploration of the ways collaborative art practices and social justice aesthetics can shape and influence community spaces, specifically the Staller Steps. Participants are invited to engage with the visiting artists through drawing, modeling, and dialogue, which will culminate in a public exhibition showcasing the ideas and designs generated during the residency.

A talk with Rhoda Reddock October 8, 2025 | 12:30 pm - 1:50 pm Humanities Building, Room 1008 | Stony Brook University Rhoda Reddock is Emerita Professor of Gender, Social Change and Development and former Deputy Campus Principal of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, where she also headed the Institute for Gender and Development Studies. A long-standing activist in the Caribbean women’s movement, she was a founding member and first chair of the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA). She has held leadership roles in the International Sociological Association and the Caribbean Studies Association, and is currently an elected expert of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Professor Reddock is the author and editor of numerous influential works, including Women, Labour and Politics in Trinidad and Tobago (1994), Interrogating Caribbean Masculinities (2004), and Decolonial Perspective on Entangled Inequalities (2021). She has received multiple honors, including the CARICOM Triennial Award for Women, a Fulbright New Century Scholars Award, the International Woman of Courage Award (U.S. Department of State), and honorary degrees recognizing her global contributions to gender justice. Jeanelle and her team of caretakers work to transform offerings from the recent uprising into artifacts for the Black historical archive; Robin works to replace the police with a new approach to community safety; and Toshira focuses on demanding justice and accountability for lives stolen by policing. She will share insights from her extensive research and activism on how community gardens connect universities and local communities, advancing social justice, food equity, and cultural preservation through sustainable and local agriculture. Tracy E. Ore is a professor of Sociology at St. Cloud State University. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Michigan, is an active member of the American Sociological Association and the Southern Sociological Society and is Past-President of the Sociologists for Women in Society. Dr. Ore does research in the areas of poverty, food insecurity, food apartheid, and food justice. Her most recent text is The Social Construction of Difference and Inequality: Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality (Eighth edition), published by Oxford University Press in 2022. In addition to this work, Dr. Ore is a long-time activist and community organizer, from ACT-UP in the ‘80s to her current work around food justice. The connections between her scholarly work and activism are made real in the SCSU Community Garden, which she established in 2005.

This presentation aims to explore the theoretical implications arising from the expansion of Marxism beyond its European origins, particularly in the context of peripheral capitalist societies. It examines the concept of "non-Western Marxisms" and the challenges it poses to Marxism's claims of universal applicability. Building upon previous research on the reception and translation of Marxism in Latin America, the presentation seeks to extend this analytical approach to other non-Western Marxist traditions, including those from the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa. Beginning from the assumption that these "peripheral" Marxisms have made important theoretical contributions in areas such as historical time, the national question, and the political subject, the main goal is to critically interrogate the tendency within traditional Marxist historiography to treat these regional contexts as isolated case studies, rather than as sites of substantive theoretical elaboration with universal implications. During Spring 2024 students of WRT302: AI and Advocacy, directed by their instructor, Dr. Matthew Salzano, created a public-facing report identifying major risks and opportunities for social justice advocates seeking to use AI. Wang Center Lecture Hall 1 | Stony Brook University "Künü" by Mapuche filmmaker Francisco Huichaqueo, is a documentary that captures the collaborative efforts of 80 Mapuche communities to reclaim part of their ancestral lands from a large transnational forestry company in Chile, in the Araucanía-Loncoche region. "Künü" documents the creation of a space for difficult dialogue between groups with a long history of mistrust and power imbalances but at the same time focuses on the perspective of exercising the ancestral and political self-determination of local Mapuche communities.

Event flyer: Bringing Human Rights Home: The work of human rights cities | A talk with Jackie Smith November 1st, 2023; 4:00 pm Humanities Building Room 1008 | Stony Brook University Jackie Smith’s research focuses on how globalization impacts people and communities, and how social movements for the environment, health, and economic justice have advanced transformative struggles. She has documented long-term trends in transnational social movement organizations and coalitions, and connections between global politics and activism in cities and communities. Smith is currently engaged in participatory research with Pittsburgh and national human rights organizers. She is also engaged in work to connect municipalities with United Nations human rights work.
