Your admission term decides

The BME undergraduate curriculum was revised in 2025 and approved by SUNY, and two versions now run in parallel. The version that applies to you is set by the term you were admitted to Stony Brook — not by your current standing or your expected graduation year.

Focus areas Continuing students

The short answer

Admitted to Stony Brook August 2026 or later

You follow the revised curriculum. Technical electives are organized around four focus areas rather than specialization tracks, and the required core sequence has been updated.

Admitted to Stony Brook before August 2026

You follow the curriculum that was in place when you were admitted, including its specialization tracks. Your requirements have not changed, and you will complete the degree under them.

This site documents the revised curriculum. For your requirements, contact your faculty advisor or the undergraduate program coordinator, who hold the checklist for your cohort — see below.

Continuing students: where to get your requirements

If you were admitted before Fall 2026, do not plan your schedule from this site or from a checklist you downloaded in an earlier year. Your requirements come from two places:

  • Your faculty advisor, whom you meet before registration each semester
  • The undergraduate program coordinator, Jessica Kuhn (Berthold), who holds the current checklist for every cohort — bme_ug_program@stonybrook.edu

The track curriculum remains fully supported. Courses required by it continue to be offered, and no continuing student is required to switch to the revised curriculum.

What is changing

The revised curriculum updates the required core course sequence and replaces specialization tracks with focus areas that guide technical elective choice. Focus areas are not gated: students do not apply to one and are not locked into one.

Official degree requirements for the B.E. in Biomedical Engineering are maintained in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

If you are not sure which applies to you

Contact the undergraduate program with the term you were admitted to Stony Brook. Your curriculum is set by that term — not by your current standing or your expected graduation year.
