Engineering for biology and biochemistry majors

The bioengineering minor is designed for biology and biochemistry majors in the College of Arts and Sciences who want to understand how physical forces shape biological systems, and how an engineering approach helps answer questions in biology and medicine.

Who the minor is for

The minor is good preparation for graduate study in bioengineering and related fields, and for careers where an engineering background is an advantage alongside a life science degree.

Requirements

The minor’s course requirements are being updated alongside the revised BME curriculum. The official requirements are maintained in the Undergraduate Bulletin: View the bioengineering minor in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Broadly, the minor consists of an introductory biomedical engineering course, a programming course, a set of courses in one of three areas of concentration, and upper-division work in biology — roughly 21 to 23 credits, all of which must be passed with a grade of C or higher.

Current minor students: confirm your requirements with the BME undergraduate program coordinator before registering.

Updated requirements are in preparation and will be published on this site.

Declaring the minor

To declare the bioengineering minor, contact the BME undergraduate program coordinator or the undergraduate program director. Once your status as a BIO or BCH major is verified, the declaration forms will be signed.

Graduating with the minor

This step is missed often enough to be worth stating plainly: you must notify the BME undergraduate program during your final semester that you intend to graduate with the minor. The minor appears on your transcript and diploma only after the undergraduate program director confirms that you completed the required courses. If nobody tells us, we cannot confirm it, and the minor will not appear.

Advising

Your major advisor in BIO or BCH advises you on your major. The BME undergraduate program director or coordinator advises you on the minor.
