First-year applicants
Indicate biomedical engineering on your Stony Brook University application. Applications for direct admission to the major are reviewed on a rolling basis, so applying earlier is an advantage.
Admission criteria are set by the BME Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and reviewed annually. Successful applicants are well prepared in mathematics and science, and strong preparation in calculus and calculus-based physics is expected. Applicants who are not admitted directly to the major may be admitted to the University and apply to BME later — see Transferring into the BME major.
All first-year admission decisions are made by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Questions about your application should go to Undergraduate Admissions.
Transferring into the BME major
Students admitted to Stony Brook but not to the biomedical engineering major may apply to the major at any point in the academic year by contacting the undergraduate program director. Any student in good academic standing may apply.
Priority is given to students who have:
- Completed MAT 132 and PHY 132/PHY 134, or their equivalents;
- Earned a 3.20 GPA across all mathematics and physics courses, with no more than one grade below B−;
- Earned a cumulative Stony Brook GPA of 2.5 or higher; and
- Received completed course evaluations for every transferred course intended to count toward the major.
Coursework from another institution
Send your official transcript to the Stony Brook Registrar and to the BME undergraduate program director. For any course the Admissions Office does not transfer directly, submit a Transfer Credit form showing that the relevant department accepts it.
Changing majors within Stony Brook
The BME undergraduate program director must sign a Transfer of Major form confirming that you meet the criteria above.
Which curriculum applies to you
Your curriculum is determined by the term you were admitted to Stony Brook University, not the term you enter the major. See What curriculum applies to me?
Bioengineering minor
Biology and biochemistry majors can pursue a minor in bioengineering. See Bioengineering minor (BNG).
