Undergraduate program
Engineering that reaches the patient
Build the technologies that diagnose, treat and heal — from data and devices to the therapies themselves.
What you will study
The B.E. in Biomedical Engineering is a four-year program built on mathematics and the natural sciences, a required core of biomedical engineering courses, and a substantial set of technical electives chosen with a faculty advisor.
The program offers hands-on laboratory and research experience throughout. Laboratory coursework accompanies the science and engineering sequence, every student completes a two-semester senior design project, and students can earn academic credit for independent research in a faculty member's laboratory or for an industry internship. Strong students may also apply to the honors program, which is built around an independent research thesis, or to the accelerated five-year BE/MS degree.
Detailed degree requirements are maintained in the Undergraduate Bulletin
Four Focus Areas
Technical electives are organized around four focus areas. Focus areas guide elective choice — they are not separate majors, and students do not apply to them.
Data Sciences and Bioinformatics in Health Care
Machine learning, sequencing and clinical data — applied to precision medicine, drug discovery, imaging and clinical decision support.
Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing
Genetic engineering, cell line development and bioreactors — how a therapy actually gets made.
Clinical Instrumentation and Devices
Imaging, sensing and the materials used with and in the body — the devices clinicians rely on.
Clinical Career Preparation
A biomedical engineering degree together with the coursework required for MD, DO and PA programs.
Accreditation
The Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.
