Goldwater Scholarship
Spiros is a Junior Simons STEM Scholar studying Applied and Pure Mathematics with
a Minor in Mechanical Engineering. He is interested in Applied & Computational Mathematics,
particularly the development of numerical and mathematical models with engineering
applications. He is currently involved with two research groups at Stony Brook: The
CMADO group under Dr. Shikui Chen, where he is developing a non-linear topology optimization
algorithm for designing aneurysm stents, and Dr. Harry Markakis’ group, where he is
researching the usage of Lagrangian particle hydrodynamics for relativistic flows.
Last summer, he researched arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian contact mechanics algorithms
at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Through the Goldwater Scholarship, Spiros hopes to be better prepared for the graduate
school application process through the experience I gained in writing the Goldwater
essays, as well as through the incredible Goldwater Scholars alumni network.
Spiros is a part of the Simons STEM Scholars on campus.
