Critical Language Scholarship

Devorah is a pre-med student majoring in biochemistry and a member of the WISE program at Stony Brook. Her long-term goal is to pursue an MD-PhD to combine patient care with research. Originally from Rochester, she spends her summers working at a cafe along the Erie Canal. On campus, she is involved in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, where she co-leads the Prayer Small Group. In her free time, she enjoys running outdoors and studying Mandarin and Spanish. She has been learning Mandarin since she was five, so she actually learned to read Chinese before English!

She is most looking forward to returning to China. While learning a language on her own or in the classroom is enjoyable, she wants to use it in real, meaningful interactions. Ultimately, Devorah views language as a tool for achieving a deeper goal: understanding one another. Through CLS, she hopes to strengthen her Mandarin fluency, learn from her Chinese and American peers, and prepare to use Mandarin in research and clinical settings, with the goal of bridging American and Chinese scientific research communities.

Devorah is a part of the WISE Honors Program on campus.
