Behrgen Smith

Phd Student, Biochemistry and Structural Biology
Hertz Fellowship
Behrgen Smith is a Biochemistry and Structural Biology PhD student at Stony Brook
University, specializing in structure-based drug design. His research integrates computational
and experimental methods to engineer novel therapeutics. Previously, at Congruence
Therapeutics, Smith developed bespoke algorithms for compound selection and high-throughput
experimentation.
His passion for computational biology was sparked during a University of Pittsburgh
internship, later leading him to establish a research curriculum for undergraduates
at the Milwaukee School of Engineering . Outside the lab, Behrgen is an avid runner
and hiker who enjoys animation and baking technical sweets like macarons and cakes.
He has applied for funding in the applied physical sciences to focus on solving short-term problems that plague large populations, such as genetic disease. Having achieved finalist status, he now looks forward to capitalizing on that recognition throughout his upcoming fellowship experience.
