SPD’s Mission Statement

• To expand educational opportunities for part-time adult students at Stony Brook in both credit and non-credit programs and in doing so, become a resource for the University and community.
• To serve as a source of expertise for the campus on issues concerning adult students and adult learning.
• To act as an advocate for adult learners and for adult education in general, seeking to reach out to under-served professional and specialized populations.
• To continuously experiment in developing new programs, new delivery formats (such as the Internet), and new instructional models which enhance educational quality for adult students and by implication for all students at the University.
• To enable all SPD staff members to increase their professional expertise as adult educators and as academic administrators as a way of constantly improving the school and its activities.
