Teacher Education and Educational Leadership at Stony Brook
Teacher Education at Stony Brook University (SBU) embraces a University-wide approach for its Teacher Education Programs and Educational Leadership Programs. Nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), our Teacher Education Programs in English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and TESOL are located in their respective disciplinary departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Educational Leadership Programs are in the Department of Technology and Society in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.Undergraduate, Graduate and 5-year Accelerated Bachelor's/Master's Programs are available.
The University's distributed organizational paradigm for teacher education has drawn upon the disciplinary strength of its respective programs while promoting flexibility and creativity in interdisciplinary partnership. It has developed teacher candidates' disciplinary research skills, reflective practices, partnership, and collaboration and has ensured the combination of disciplinary academic rigor with the study and application of pedagogical theory and practice.
The programs are coordinated by the University's Professional Education Program (PEP). Their diverse disciplinary perspectives and pedagogical approaches are linked by shared intellectual inquiry, standard-based goals, and professional vision as articulated in PEP's Conceptual Framework. PEP facilitates these linkages, develops a unified fieldwork and clinical practice program, and strengthens the University's partnerships with Long Island's and New York City schools.
The University's site in New York City and the SUNY Urban Teacher Center (SUTEC) enhance partnership initiatives with New York City's Department of Education. SBU's teacher education and administrators' programs have achieved national and international recognition and our alumni are being sought by schools for their outstanding professional preparation.
Our alumni who serve in teaching and administrative positions across Long Island and New York City, in states across the United States, and in other parts of the world have strengthened SBU's ties with the local and global community.
