New CEAS-EOP Gateway Scholars Program Opens Pathways to Engineering for Students

This summer, 42 incoming EOP students participated in the inaugural CEAS-EOP Gateway Scholars Program, an intensive four-week initiative designed to prepare students interested in engineering and applied sciences for the academic requirements of CEAS majors. Participants took intensive CEAS courses in math, physics or programming, along with academic success coursework focused on skills such as note-taking and strategies for succeeding in demanding STEM courses. Gateway Scholars will receive course enrollment and degree-planning guidance, additional academic success workshops, opportunities to participate in the CEAS Peer Mentoring Program, and with one-on-one meetings with the CEAS advising team.

URECA Researcher of the Month: Charlotte Cain

Charlotte Cain is a Computer Science (Honors) and Applied Mathematics and Statistics double-major (class of 2027) specializing in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, whose dream is to pursue a PhD in Computer Science, focusing on the intersection between computer science and social behavioral science. After working for only a few months under the mentorship of Dr. Zhichen Liu (Civil Engineering) to investigate how generative AI may influence learning in engineering education settings, Charlotte applied for and was admitted to URECA-Explorations in STEM, a 10-week summer research program co-administered by URECA and the Career Center that supports students new to research.

Technological Systems: Technology with a Purpose

Meet Anita Wang, a recent Spring grad who majored in Technological Systems Management (TSM) and Economics (ECO). Throughout her time on campus, Anita has remained active both academically and professionally. As a TSM Student Leader, she has worked to build a stronger sense of community within the major and help students navigate a program that is broad and flexible.

Brick by Brick: The Future of 3D Concrete Printing

As construction technology continues to evolve, students in the Printing Structures Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) team at Stony Brook are working at the intersection of materials, mechanics, and automation to build on previous cohorts’ printer development by testing the system and creating sustainable 3D-printable concrete mixtures. Marija Krstic, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, leads the Printing Structures VIP team with a focus on the design, development, and optimization of an intermediate-scale 3D concrete printer.
