Message from the President
Greetings, Seawolves!
I am especially excited to welcome you, our newest students, to the number one public
university in the great state of New York. That you have entrusted Stony Brook University
with one of the most meaningful decisions of your personal and professional careers
is a testament to our growing legacy—a legacy you will now help shape. We’re so glad
you’re here!
As I enter my second year as Stony Brook’s president, I can tell you that you have come to a very special place: a world‑class public research university with a warm and welcoming culture, along with endless opportunities to expand your knowledge, skills and passions. I’ve watched students build lifelong friendships and find mentors who help them grow in ways they never expected. I’ve seen how deeply this entire community is devoted to your success.
Stony Brook is my seventh university where I have been a student, a faculty member,
or a leader, and of all the campuses I’ve been part of, I find our Stony Brook undergraduates
to be the most inspiring. Not only are they highly aspirational and extremely talented,
but they are also truly grateful to be here. They have told me they appreciate getting
an excellent, affordable education at a place where they feel they belong and where
they can thrive.
Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of seeing our students connect at our
joyous community events like Light the Brook and Roth Regatta, club showcases, athletic
competitions, and countless other gatherings and celebrations. Many of these traditions
were created by students themselves, and they continue to grow because each new class
brings its own energy, creativity and spirit.
As you begin this new chapter, you may find yourself in situations that feel challenging
or unfamiliar. I remember feeling that way myself as a first‑year engineering student,
when demanding classes made me question whether I belonged in the major. It was only
when I took full advantage of the resources around me that I began to thrive. If you
find yourself navigating similar moments, know that you are surrounded by a dedicated
and caring campus community ready to support you, including our Student Support Team, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Career Center among many others.
Your journey is just beginning, and I am excited to see how you will flourish here
at Stony Brook. Whether I’m at university events, meeting with student groups, or
simply walking across the Academic Mall, I look forward to connecting with you. You
can sign up for a 1-on-1 meeting with me during my student office hours, or just stop
me to talk when you see me around campus. I look forward to hearing about your experience
and ideas for making our university even better.
I hope you will find that Stony Brook exceeds your highest expectations for your education
inside and outside the classroom. The knowledge and experiences you gain here will
provide a strong foundation for your personal and professional success. I look forward
to cheering on your achievements throughout your time here and when you leave as our
alumni.
