New Graduate Students

New Transfer & Exchange Students

Housing Deposit Information

There is a $200 housing deposit that students pay in SOLAR. Students participating in Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) do not need to pay a housing deposit.

Undergraduate and Graduate housing deposits are due by 11:59 PM on May 1. Deposits will not be accepted after these dates. Students who miss their deposit deadline should join the university housing waitlist through the Housing Portal.

  • New First-Year: Students receive university housing as long as they deposit for housing by May 1, meet all applicable housing deadlines, and complete all application steps.
  • New Graduate: Students receive university housing as long as they deposit for housing by May 1, meet all applicable housing deadlines, and complete all application steps.
  • New Transfer: Students may submit a housing deposit by May 1 to indicate their interest in university housing; however, they are not prioritized for university housing. Spaces will be granted based on cancellations of other undergraduate students. If vacancies are available, students with a home address farther from campus are given priority within the transfer student population to be considered for housing.

Application Information

The Fall New Student Housing Application will be available in the Housing Portal beginning at 10 AM on Monday, April 12, 2027.

All housing applications and related transactions are completed through the Housing Portal, which you can access using your NetID and password. Please note that you will not be able to log in until the day after you set up your NetID and password with the university.

Students can complete general application information before their designated room selection period.

The housing application consists of the following components:

  • Reviewing and agreeing to the Terms of Occupancy, financial liability, and required acknowledgments.
  • GradGuard renter’s insurance information, selecting a meal plan, and completing other applicable campus partner requirements.
  • Completing a questionnaire to help facilitate roommate matching.
  • Selecting your room space, if eligible.

Please Note: Some students are not eligible to select their own room space, including New Graduate students arriving before August 1, Southampton Campus residents, Intensive English Center participants, SUNY Korea Students, International Academic Program participants, and New Transfer students. These students receive administrative housing assignments.

Some First-Year students may also be administratively assigned, provided they complete the entire housing application.

Important Dates, Assignments, & Space Availability

FIRST-YEAR HOUSING COMMUNITIES

New first-year students are housed within one of our three first-year communities: H, Mendelsohn, or Roosevelt. Most students live in double-occupancy, corridor-style rooms, economy three-person rooms, or temporary triple rooms, with a limited number of single rooms available in Eleanor Roosevelt Community.

Students participating in specific programs have the following housing locations:

  • WISE Honors: Encouraged to live in Keller Hall in Roosevelt Community.
  • University Scholars: Encouraged to live in Greeley Hall in Roosevelt Community.
  • Yardi Scholars: Encouraged to live in Wagner Hall in Roosevelt Community.
  • International Student Pre-Orientation (ISPO): Roosevelt Community.
  • Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars: Yang Hall.
  • Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH): Double rooms in Benedict South Hall in H Community.

ROOM SELECTION DATES AND TIMES

First-year students may begin selecting a room at their assigned selection opening date and time. Room selection must be completed by Wednesday, June 9, 2027, at 4 PM. If no rooms are available, follow the instructions under “If No Rooms Are Available” below to complete your application.

Selection Start Dates & Times:

  • Wednesday, May 19, at 10 AM: Honors College, University Scholars, Yardi Scholars, Simons STEM Scholars, WISE Honors, and International Student Pre-Orientation (ISPO) participants.
  • Wednesday, May 26, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select female-designated spaces.
  • Thursday, May 27, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) spaces.
  • Friday, May 28, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select male-designated spaces.

Your room selection day and time is the first opportunity to access the Housing Portal and make a selection. After that time has passed, you can enter the portal during our selection windows, between 10 AM and 9:59 PM, to make your selection.

SELECTING YOUR ROOM

First-year students will be able to select from our corridor-style housing first-year communities. Students participating in the following programs are limited specific locations:

  • Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH): Participants may select only in Benedict South Hall.
  • University Scholars, WISE Honors, Yardi Scholars, and ISPO: Participants may select only in Wagner, Keller, or Greeley Halls in Roosevelt Community.
  • Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars: Participants may select only in Yang Hall.

Once a room is selected, the assignment is final, including selections made on your behalf by a roommate group member. Review the room and your group’s preferences carefully before completing the selection.

If you are experiencing a roommate conflict before move-in, please contact your community's Area Office and Residence Hall Director for further assistance. If you experience a roommate conflict after moving in, you can contact your Resident Assistant for assistance. A room change and swap period starts the third week of the semester, but options may be limited.

IF NO ROOMS ARE AVAILABLE

Due to high demand for university housing, students selecting closer to the application deadline may find that no rooms remain available for self-selection.

If this happens, confirm your need for a housing assignment in the Housing Portal by the application deadline. Completing this step allows you to finish your application even if you cannot select a room.

Students who meet all applicable housing requirements and complete this confirmation will receive an administrative housing assignment before the start of the fall semester.

ROOMMATE MATCHING AND GROUPS

The housing application provides tools to help you connect with potential roommates. During the application process, you can:

  • Complete a questionnaire about yourself and your preferred living environment to support roommate matching.
  • Search for and communicate with other students applying for housing.
  • Select a room individually. You are not required to join a roommate group or select with another student. Any remaining vacant beds in your room will be available for other students to select.
  • Create or join a two-person roommate group. Either member can select a room for both students, giving each member control over both students’ assignments. This option is recommended for students who already know each other and are in close communication. A selection made by either member is final, including when it is made on your behalf.

SINGLE ROOM AVAILABILITY

A limited number of single rooms are available to first-year students in Roosevelt Community. Single rooms cost more than other room types, so please discuss this option with anyone supporting you financially before selecting one.

You may select a single room during room selection if one is available. If no single rooms are available, you will not be able to select one.

PREPARING FOR MOVE-IN

Visit the Move-In Website for arrival dates and information about preparing to move into your assigned space.

GRADUATE HOUSING COMMUNITIES

New graduate students are housed in Chapin Apartments. Most new graduate students are housed in double-occupancy bedrooms in shared apartments.

ROOM SELECTION DATES AND TIMES

New graduate students may begin selecting a room at their assigned selection start date and time. Room selection must be completed by Thursday, June 17, 2027, at 4 PM.

New International Graduate Students

  • Thursday, June 10, at 10 AM: Students eligible to select female-designated or Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) spaces.
  • Thursday, June 10, at 2 PM: Students eligible to select male-designated spaces.

New Domestic Graduate Students

  • Monday, June 14, at 10 AM: Students whose home address is 100 miles or more from Stony Brook University, measured by direct-line distance.
  • Monday, June 14, at 2 PM: Students whose home address is less than 100 miles from Stony Brook University, measured by direct-line distance.

Your assigned date and time is your first opportunity to select a room in the Housing Portal. After your selection period opens, you may return to the portal to select a room during the daily selection hours of 10 AM to 9:59 PM. On the final day, selection closes at 4 PM.

SELECTING YOUR ROOM

New graduate students may select an available space in Chapin Apartments. You may select a space only for yourself, even if you plan to live with a specific roommate.

New graduate students arriving before August 1 receive an administrative housing assignment rather than selecting their own room.

ROOMMATE MATCHING AND SELECTION

During the housing application, you will complete a questionnaire about yourself and your preferred living environment. You can also search for and communicate with other students applying for housing.

If you would like to share a room with a specific student, you will need to coordinate your selections:

  • One student must select a space in the room and complete their booking first.
  • Once that booking is finalized, the second student can add an available space in the same room to their cart and complete their own booking.
  • The remaining space is available to other eligible students until the second student completes their booking. Coordinating your selections does not guarantee that you will be assigned together.
  • If another student selects the remaining space first, you will need to wait until the next room change or swap period to request an adjustment. A student cannot be removed from their selected assignment to accommodate your roommate preference.

PREPARING FOR MOVE-IN

Visit the Move-In Website for arrival dates and information about preparing to move into your assigned space.

TRANSFER HOUSING AVAILABILITY

New transfer students may submit a housing deposit by May 1 to indicate their interest in university housing. However, they are not prioritized for on-campus housing.

Spaces are offered as other undergraduate students cancel their housing. When spaces become available, transfer students whose home addresses are farther from campus receive priority within the transfer student population.

APPLICATION AND ASSIGNMENT TIMELINE

New transfer students who submit their housing application by Wednesday, June 9, 2027, at 4 PM will receive an update by Thursday, July 1, regarding their likelihood of receiving an on-campus housing assignment.

If space becomes available, most housing assignments will be finalized by Thursday, July 22.

While completing your housing application, we strongly encourage you to also explore off-campus housing options. The Office of Commuter Student Services and Off-Campus Living offers resources to support your search.

HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS

New transfer students receive administrative housing assignments in continuing undergraduate residence halls where space is available. Students cannot select their room, room type, or roommate through this process.

PREPARING FOR MOVE-IN

Visit the Move-In Website for arrival dates and information about preparing to move into your assigned space.

HOUSING REQUIREMENTS AND LOCATIONS
  • Intensive English Center Students: To be housed, you must place a housing deposit by May 1 and complete the IEC application. You can find housing information and the application steps directly in the IEC application. The program provides Campus Residences with a list of students who require on-campus housing based on the applications submitted to their office, and students are assigned accordingly. IEC students are assigned to spaces in our traditional corridor-style communities.

  • International Academic Program Students: To be housed, you must complete the "On-Campus Housing Intent" process in the Housing Portal by May 1 and the housing application by June 10. Students are primarily assigned to spaces in West Apartments, but some may be assigned to suite-style residence halls based on demand.

  • SUNY Korea & SBIAHU Students: To be housed, you must complete the "On-Campus Housing Intent" process in the Housing Portal by May 1 and the housing application by June 10. Most students are assigned to spaces in our continuing student areas, which include corridor, suite, and apartment-style residence halls.

HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS

Students receive administrative housing assignments and cannot select their room or room type. Programs may collect room type preferences, which Campus Residences considers when making assignments. Submitting a preference does not guarantee a particular room type.

PREPARING FOR MOVE-IN

Visit the Move-In Website for arrival dates and information about preparing to move into your assigned space.

Additional Information

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) allows students to share a bedroom, suite, and/or apartment regardless of sex, gender identity, or gender expression. Students choosing GIH should be comfortable living with roommates and/or suitemates of any gender identity. Residents are committed to creating and affirming a bias-free environment that supports LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.

Choosing GIH is an academic-year commitment to the community, rather than to specific roommates or suitemates. Because plans and relationships can change, you should be comfortable sharing your space with any student approved for GIH. If a vacancy occurs in your unit, it will be filled by another GIH-approved student.

To sign up, log in to the Housing Portal during the sign-up period, from Monday, April 12, 2027, at 10 AM through Thursday, May 13, at 4 PM, and review and complete the GIH Sign-Up process. By signing and completing this form, you affirm your commitment to a bias-free living environment.

Review all information carefully before submitting. Once you submit your GIH agreement, you are committed to living in GIH for the academic year and cannot change or swap into male- or female-designated housing.

  • New first-year students in GIH live in Benedict South Hall in H Community, regardless of Undergraduate College or Honors Program affiliation. Benedict South offers double rooms in a traditional corridor-style residence hall.
  • New transfer and graduate students are assigned to available spaces in GIH suites or apartments within their respective housing locations.

To cancel your upcoming housing reservation, log in to the Housing Portal and select “2027-2028 Housing Agreement Cancellation Request” on the homepage.

Cancellation Fees

Cancel only when you are certain you no longer need university housing for the upcoming academic year. Cancellation fees depend on when you submit your request:

  • April 30 or earlier: $0
  • May 1-June 30: $200
  • July 1-July 31: $300
  • August 1-August 21, before moving in: $400
  • August 22 or later, before moving in: $500

For complete information about cancellation, no-show (failure to cancel before your housing agreement begins), and termination policies, visit our Housing Cancellations & Financial Liability website.

Requesting Housing After Cancellation

Canceling your housing agreement forfeits any priority you had for university housing. If you later decide you need housing, you must join the University Housing Waitlist through the Housing Portal.

Waitlist offers depend on space availability and are not guaranteed. We cannot predict when or whether you will receive an offer. Depending on housing demand, some students may not receive an offer, and most offers occur during the spring semester. You should continue exploring off-campus housing options while on the waitlist. Visit our Housing Waitlist Application website for application information.
