Job Role
The primary responsibility of Summer Housing Assistants (SHA) is to support the Campus Residences’ staff and conference/summer guests to ensure that all guests’ housing needs are met. Summer Housing Assistants will have the opportunity to work with various populations, including youth and adult groups. The SHA’s main duties are to prepare and organize various housing elements for conference groups and to provide quality customer service.
Summer Housing Assistant responsibilities include the following:
- Participate in overnight duty rotation from 7:00 PM to 8:30 AM and 24-hour duty on weekends and holidays
- Support Campus Residence staff with check-ins and check-outs from residential communities
- Complete building/room inspections and preparations
- Provide excellent customer service to conference guests and residents
- Serve as the primary point of contact for guests/participants in emergency situations
- Assigned administrative tasks as assigned
Some SHAs will have the opportunity to work for additional hourly pay throughout the summer to perform specific tasks, including, but not limited to:
- Inventorying linens, laundering, sorting linens, setting up spaces, turning over spaces once guests have departed, and packaging linens at the end of the summer.
- Work scheduled shifts in a Community Area Office between the hours of 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM Monday-Friday.
Summer Housing Assistants seeking additional pay must be eligible for student payroll and will be approved only for minimal other commitments outside their SHA role.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be current Stony Brook University students and enrolled in Summer 2026 and/or Fall 2026 classes.
- Applicants must have a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher at the time of application.
- Applicants must be in good conduct standing.
- Applicants must be able to work for the entire summer. The summer timeline runs from May 23 to August 20.
- Applicants must be available for an individual interview, typically scheduled in March/April.
- Applicants must attend one of the information sessions listed below in full to apply for the SHA position.
- Summer Housing Assistants (SHAs) must be available to work from July 17 to July 27.

Students applying to be a 2026 Summer Housing Assistant are required to attend a mandatory information session in order to gain a thorough understanding of the application and selection process, as well as job responsibilities.

As part of their compensation, Summer Housing Assistants receive a full bed waiver and a meal plan stipend. The meal plan stipend will be $500.00 for SHAs in non-cooking spaces and $250.00 for SHAs in cooking spaces. The meal plan stipend will be distributed in multiple installments over the summer.
Some SHAs will also have the opportunity to work for additional hours at pay. These staff members will be paid $17.50 per hour for new SHAs and $17.75 for returning SHAs. Applicants will be asked to indicate their interest in working additional hours for pay within the application.
When applying, new SHA applicants will be required to submit the name and email of one professional reference. References can be professional staff members, faculty members, former employers, advisors, etc. References should not be from parents/guardians, friends, etc. Prior to listing someone as a reference, you should speak to them and ask for permission to use them as a reference for your application. References should not be surprised when we contact them for information about your experiences with the SHA role.
Please note that we are not looking for a letter of recommendation from your reference. Rather, we will reach out directly to the references you provided and ask them to complete a recommendation form with standardized questions on your behalf.
Returning applicants are not required to submit a reference.
