In her previous PhD, Viviane Magno Ribeiro wrote a dissertation on Spinoza’s radical political theory and concept of rights. Her current research at SBU focuses on the relationship between body, mind, and soul in Spinoza’s works, comparing it with the conceptions of other early modern philosophers, and with the reception of ancient thought. In 2025, she participated in the NEH Summer Institute on “Slavery and Early Modern Philosophy.”

Prior to joining Stony Brook, Viviane Magno Ribeiro obtained her doctorate in Theory of State from the Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro, PUC-Rio (2019), a master’s degree in Constitutional Law from PUC-Rio (2014), and a master’s degree in History from CPDOC/FGV (2014). For five years, she served as a law clerk to the Brazilian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, working on cases involving human rights, cultural and environmental rights, as well as on the Special Working Group on Transitional Justice investigating crimes against humanity of the dictatorship period in Brazil (2013–2018). She was a visiting scholar at Columbia University Law School on a fellowship funded by CAPES/PDSE (2018) and a fellow at the Institute for Critical Social Inquiry at the New School for Social Research (2019). Since 2019, she has been an associate professor at PUC-Rio (on academic leave).
