Admission Requirements & Application Process
Engineering Science (ESG) & Engineering Chemistry (ECM)
→ Materials Science and Engineering (ESM)
The Accelerated BE/MS program enables undergraduate students in Engineering Science (ESG) and Engineering Chemistry (ECM) to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (ESM) in just five years. Students may take up to two graduate courses (6 credits) during their senior year as technical electives. These courses count towards both the undergraduate and master’s degrees, enabling completion of the M.S. with just one additional year. The remaining 24 credits are completed during the fifth year to fulfill the 30-credit M.S. requirement.
Program Structure
- Accelerated ESG students follow a modified course sequence and take ESM 455 in their junior year in lieu of ESM 335. In their senior year, students take ESM 513 in the fall semester to substitute ESM 335 and another graduate course in the spring.
- Students who have already taken ESM 335 are not recommended to enroll in ESM 513 and must instead complete another ESM 500-level course for the Master’s program.
Admission Requirements
- ESG or ECM majors in good academic standing
- Minimum 3.0 GPA in the major
- Apply by the end of the junior spring semester
- Must be a senior to begin the accelerated program
- Must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the major to transition into the M.S. year
Application Process
- During junior spring, email ESMandCME_GradAdmissions@stonybrook.edu about their interest to be admitted with most recent unofficial transcript
- Meet with the Undergraduate Program Director (UPD) and Graduate Program Director (GPD) to plan senior-year and graduate coursework
- Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Program Director; selected students receive an offer and must return a signed acceptance
- The department then submits the Accelerated Participant Program (APP) Declaration Form to the Graduate School
- After Graduate School approval, students must obtain email approval from the UPD and GPD to enroll in graduate courses
- Submit the Permission for APP students to Enroll in Grad Courses and upload the email approvals to the form to get approvals from Graduate School by the deadline.
- In the 5th year to matriculate to the Graduate School as MS graduate student, student must apply directly to the MS program.
As an undergraduate, students will be charged tuition at the undergraduate rate for both graduate and undergraduate courses. Once the graduate career begins in the 5th year of the program, the student will be subject to graduate tuition, fees and Graduate School regulations. Students will be permitted to live in Graduate Housing however they will no longer be eligible for Undergraduate Financial Aid.
